Missed the first day first show but managed for the third show. The problem with generous ideas are that they are derailed most of the time by old fashioned execution and thats what exactly happened with the movie Toilet, which had the capacity to become an intense, dark mocking take on one of the greatest problems that still disgracefully torture India: Excretion in the open.
The movie which has an awkward name in the first place wastes so much of its initial time in creating a romance between Keshav played by Akshay Kumar and the actress Jaya played by Pednekar. They get married and soon she find out that there is no toilet in her new home and she has to join the team of women who gets up early morning before the sunrise to complete her Toilet rituals.
This movie is more of how to finish the social taboos and make toilets in every home rather than a powerful social drama which this movie was capable of. No doubt Akshay has been playing Hero of India in his last few movies and he has done a wonderful job and here also he tries hard to lead but you will feel that it is so much stretched.
Director Narayan Singh edited the movie well but the entire movie is predictable and unconvincing climax. This movie is inspired by a true incident from MP village couple of years back but little that it offers by way of insight rings true. The performances are good with Akshay trying hard to look 36.
The movie reminds of the 1967 Manoj Kumar Upkar movie which in the same way went out to promote Lal Bahadur Shastri Ji slogan "Jai Jawan Jai Kisan". Well the Music is nothing special and cinematography could have been better. I leave it to you to decide whether to go in hall or watch in home, I wish I had chose the later.
