Tridev(1989)

Lyrics : Anand Bakshi
Cast : Sunny Deol, Jackie Shroff, Naseeruddin Shah, Madhuri Dixit, Sonam, Sangeeta
Bijlani, Shekhar Suman, Amrish Puri,
Introduction:
Tridev was a multi-starrer musical block buster which was the directorial debut of Rajiv Rai. The film had a huge starcast as indicated above. The story was the same old good fights evil and later good wins but becoz of the starcast and the music the film did very well at the box-office. The film also marked the debut of music director Viju Shah who had composed the film music. I still remember when this movie was released we had this huge queue of cars waiting to go into Drive-in to watch this movie becoz at that time it was the only “real” theatre-and-picnic spot of Abad.
Story/Plot:
Film starts of without a fast background score with unique sounds and then we have our own Tej Sapru with his brother doing illegal smuggling with Don(Dalip Tahil) of arms and ammunition. In the next scene we are shown the huge set constructed on the rocks with water flowing under the set as the home of the villain of the decade Bhujang (Amrish Puri) who has a typical villain kind of music behind him and laughs as scarier as the ghost of some Ramsay Movie. As u would have predicted Bhujang is the villain of the movie. Now we have the introduction of the imaandar Police inspector Karan(Sunny Deol) who’s entry is like entry of Sean Connery in a Bond movie. Karan creates havoc in the planet of Bhujang and he’s thus transferred to Madhavpur village. Oh yes I forgot Karan also has a fiancée Divy (Madhuri Dixit) who has a bro Ravi (Jaggu Dada) and are children of Commissioner of Police Mathur (Anupam Kher) who always has a oiled wig so that it doesn’t fly off. Now coming back to Madhavpur is the introduction of Jai Singh (Naseeruddin Shah) who at first confronts Karan but then they both become friends. Introduction of second heroine Renu (Sonam) who’s a film actress and is shooting in the village and somehow comes across Jai and falls in love with him. By the time Bhujang, in order to take out his brother Goga from jail, kidnaps Divy and Ravi helps Goga out and thus he joins the Bhujang gang with a purpose of destroying Bhujang and Bhujang is unaware of it (now that’s what I call Bollywood). Anyway then they all go to kill Karan. But our hero Karan remains alive and takes an oath to kill Bhujang and so does Jai singh becoz he wants to kill his friend’s killers and also his dad’s killers.
Take a break…….
O.K. returning back we have Karan with a moustache coming to Mumbai becoming a taxi driver and he starts destroying Bhujang’s whereabouts. Jai also co-incidentally (from the story writer’s desk) lands in Mumbai and meets Renu. After a 5-6 scenes and a couple of songs (I think) we have Karan and Ravi meeting together at Shrikant’s place (who Shrikant ??Shrikant is Shekhar Suman who is a journalist and informer to police openly condemns Bhujang as a Desh Drohi and does it right). Time out for Shrikant becoz he gets by Bhujang with another wafadaar Police inspector Suraj Singh (Sharat Saxena) doing wafadari for Bhujang.
Now Karan destroys nearly all the storage areas of Bhujang so they plan to loot a bank. In this crime scene Tej Sapru gets killed and so we have reached the climax now. Now all of the 3 heroes (TRIDEV) come together and destroy Bhujang which concludes the movie and also the description of the plot.
Performances:
Sunny Deol:Is good. He is great to watch flexing his muscles and delivering his dialogues. Doesn’t scream while saying the dialogues which is always good. When I see him in this movie I remember his acting in the movie ‘Arjun”…I m glad that he didn’t dance at all in this movie.
Jackie Shroff:Looked as handsome as ever in this movie. Plays his role as an angry young man well. His confrontations with his dad are good to watch. Dresses differently with a chunari on jacket and jeans..
Naseeruddin Shah: Is as usual good to watch. This time he danced in the movie (first and last time) better than Sunny DeoI must say. Looks ok with moustache would have looked without moustache but since his role was of a villager then some change had to be thought off which was done well.
Shekhar Suman: Is good. Does not overact in the movie. Plays his role, although, small well. Its gr8 that he didn’t do comedy in the movie.
Amrish Puri: Is always good in the role of a Villain. Continuing his villainous roles from Mr. India, plays his part well. Tends to overact in some scenes but is manageable. Well no other actor would have suited the character of Bhujang except Amrish Puri in my opinion.
Mrs.Nene aka Madhuri Dixit: Well she has acted well. Considering it as a male dominated movie she had a small role to play and she played it well. Looks very cute.
Sonam: Does nothing but singing songs in the movie ands wearing short clothes. Her role is just to add glamour to the movie. Acts (?) ok.
Mrs.Azhar aka Sangeeta Bijlani: Doesn’t know how to act, doesn’t know how to dance in the movie. Her acting is not worth watching at all in the movie. Didn’t like her in the movie.
Other performances by Anupam Kher, Tej Sapru, Anjna Mumtaz, Vijayendra, Sharat Saxena, Tej Sapru, Dalip Tahil are good to watch. Sharat Saxena tries to add some humor and succeeds.
Music: Music is good. I specially liked the background score and the musical score for each character. Songs are good. The all-time famous Oye-Oye inspired from Bangles-Walk like an Egyptian (K.K. and CA I wrote where the song was “inspired from” this time..lol..) and the other songs are good to hear and watch too.. The slower version “tirche Nainowale” is good to hear.
Conclusion:All in all a good timepass. Can be watched when there is nothing else to do instead of being bored. I initially was giving it a 3 star rating but the extra 1 star is for the music and Bhujang’s laugh...hahahahaha…….
Waiting for comments(?) if any…
