Ok, first things first, let me say that the one thing I really enjoyed about this movie was the Special Effects. Really, it was some of the best effects I have seen since Avatar.
So, with that out of the way, let me just bring about a plot summary to make some sense of this movie: ( summary taken from IMDB) Sam Flynn, the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn, looks into his fathers disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 20 years. Along with Kevins loyal confidant, father and son embark on a life-and-death journey across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous.
So, sound like a Cyberpunk film, ala the Matrix, doesnt it? Well, in a way yes, it is about how the main characters in the film are digitized into a cyber world called the grid, and have to fight the evil program and escape it.
Sounds like a lot of fun, and indeed, the first 45 mins of TRON are total paisa vasool with Action sequences that remind you of The Dark Knight and The Matrix.
And when you first catch a glimpse of the digital world called The Grid I tell you, it will take your breath away, especially if you see this movie in 3-D.
Sadly, after the initial enthusiasm wears off, the movie adopts a very lethargic pace, and does not move anywhere. It is so boring, there is no nice dialogue, or indeed, any explanation about the plot of the movie, apart from some convoluted logic.
And the plot, if you look closely, has a lot of loopholes. Characters come and go for no reason, and you wonder why the heck the protagonists are behaving the way they do.
The bad acting and very very poor dialogue delivery only makes this worse. Jeff Bridges, remember is an Oscar Winning Actor, but the way he acts and his dialogue delivery are so bad at times, it makes me want to laugh. Olivia Wilde as the heroine provides nice eye candy, but thats about it. The heros name I cannot remember, and the way he behaves makes him look half stoned all the time.
The background music is badly chosen as well, and even a cameo from Daft Punk cannot liven matters a lot.
So, seems like a bad movie to watch, right? Not really, TRON Legacy can be forgiven a lot of its foibles if you watch it in IMAX, or at the very least, in 3-D. If nothing else, the Special Effects and the digital world of the GRID look amazing.
My opinion, watch if you do not care about the plot and want some lovely special effects.
