Love is a struggle which the partners have to fight together. When love flows uninterrupted, the sailing is as smooth as in a lake. When we move out from the comfort of the lake to the flowing river or in a roaring sea the journey is an enduring struggle. Tum Mile is the journey of the Lovers whose boat is been almost collapsed hitting rocks.. Nature reflects the mood of the people in different forms. In Tum Mile a flood is been used to show the disturbed relationship between the lovers.
Ex lovers (Emraan Hashmi & Soha Ali Khan) meet in a plane directed to Mumbai. The bad memories of past love which they consider as a ‘big accident’ flow to them and reflecting the mood, the plane passes through turbulent weather. In Mumbai, the meteorological department witnesses the formation of a cyclone. Mumbai welcome them with the normal warmth but soon the nature struck big. Trapped in the flood, love search for reasons for their break up and search for light of hope.
The movie begins as a simple love story with an art house film touch. The mood created for a ‘cozy’ show for couples in a chilled theatre with metaphoric presentation of a hot relation between a rich girl and a poor but talented painter. Love made things working for them. A separation was not inevitable but somehow the writers and the director presented it as inevitable. The second half was mostly concentrated on the nature’s immediate response to the moods of the couple which is presented very well.
For a change, the plot is better in this film. This however opened another area of weakness - the ability to picture the scenes with required intensity. I mean the direction. Script, cinematography, stars and direction are the pillars I believe on which a movie stands. Tum Mile had a good plot, very good cinematography. However, the direction fails in some part where excel in many other. This made the film to fail in creating some solid ground to begin it with but somehow the later scenes compensated.
Emraan Hashmi tries to give an impressive performance but the character required a lot more talent from the actor. Little disappointed! Soha ali Khan on the other hand rocks the role. She is perfect in the role and lives the character. Soha’s performance is one of the highlight of the film. The actor who acted as Emraan’s friend in the film (Mantra?) is good.
Cinematography is very good. It is excellent in places but didn’t maintain the same standard everywhere.
Music is another plus point for the film. . Songs are very good and it well suits the situations of the film. Background scores are impressive too. However, in many a places the BGM was muted may be to give the impression of an art house film but it doesn’t help where the audience were not informed it that way and the unexpected lot used it as an opportunity to give their own BGM.
Graphics are ok.
Major Plus of the film: 1. Soha Ali Khan’s acting. 2. Cinematography in most part. 3. Good music. 4. Metaphoric representation of the story and romance.
Major Minus of the film: 1. Casting of Emraan Hashmi for the lead role which required a heavy dose of expressions. 2. Dialogues – could have been much better. 3. Direction. The director failed to picture scenes with the required perfection (many of them were ordinary scenes though). 4. Screen Play in part, especially for the break up, which was not that convincing.
It looks like the makers wanted to make a ‘TITANIC’ with ‘Tum Mile’ but it would have been much better if they focused the floods and permitted the love to float from it.
Overall, the movie can be labeled as a romantic film (A) which uses a natural calamity as a metaphor. It is an attempt to make a bridge between art and commercial films but only reaches the half way on both roads.
My rating: 2.75 stars
