I watched the film recently. As the title suggests, its about a character named "Sulu". I had just read the very basic premise and went to see the film. The overall watching experience was good and this is what I have to say about it.
The Main Cast
Vidya Balan. Sulu
Neha Dhupia. Maria
Vijay Maurya. Pankaj
Manav Kaul. Ashok
The Basic Plot
The story revolves around a recalcitrant married wife "Sulu", who wins a pressure cooker at a radio station as part of some contest. On going there to receive her prize, her eagerness gets the better of her when she sees an advertisement for a RJ opening. She volunteers and although she is amused by the contrived performance of existing executive Pankaj who tries to show her the ropes, she makes a good impression on Maria, the head of the organization. Maria finds Sulus voice to be sexy.
Sulu tries out her new found skill (her sexy voice) in various scenarios in day to day life and is quite pleased with the results. Eventually, she finally gets a job as a RJ with a late night show, "Tumhari Sulu" exclusively for her. Sulu is overjoyed and realizes shes pretty good at it. Her voice seems to have a stimulating effect on people and shes an overnight success and people of all age groups seem to be gaga about her.
On the other hand, her generally supportive husband Ashok faces some negativity at work and eventually resigns. Some unfortunate turn of events also befalls Sulus only child. Some drama ensues leading to a unsatisfactory ending.
Highlights of the Film:
1) Vidya Balan depicts the overeager and excitable Sulu very well. Her performance is commendable overall.
2) Neha Dhupia plays her character quite well. I dont know if youll call it a supporting or a lead role. Perhaps the former. But she does justice to her role.
3) The best scenes involve Sulu in her "sexy voice" mode or when she is highly amused at Pankajs contrived efforts to depict what a RJ should be like. Pankajs contorted countenance also makes watching these scenes worthwhile.
4) The ending of the film feels rushed and may not please all viewers, as the film seemed to be building up to something else.
5) I thought the story was a bit different as Im not sure a Bollywood film centering around a RJ has been made before. But her personal life seemed to be quite regular and maybe had some aspects known to several.
6) The direction of the film was adequate and some of the dialogues were quite funny.
7) There was no real music during the runtime and there probably neednt have been, in my opinion.
To conclude, it was a good time pass watch where we watch Sulus life from a distance go from "Housewife Sulu" to "Lucky Sulu" to "Sabki Sulu" and then sort of reset.
