Life is a song. Love is the music.

It is said *’Love works miracles every day: such as weakening the strong, and stretching the weak; making fools of the wise, and wise men of fools; favouring the passions, destroying reason, and in a word, turning everything topsy-turvy.’ *So today without much ado, I’ll list out my most favorite romantic numbers.

~ Tu hi Re~* *

I remember how touched I was when I first heard this song from *Bombay. *This song has a lovelorn looking Arvind Swamy wooing Manisha Koirala. The music by AR Rehman in this movie was simply fabulous and the song has been beautifully rendered by Hariharan and Kavitha Krishnamurthy

~ Dekha Ek Khwab~

A masterpiece from Silsila by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. This song had the enigmatic Amitabh courting Rekha in a field full of blooming flowers. I think this is one of the most picturesque songs of Hindi cinema.

~Jana Suno hum tum pe marte hai~

Although Bhansali?s *Khamoshi *bombed at the box office, its music went on to become a big hit. In this song, Udit Narayan has revealed immense control over his voice during the transitions from the high pitches to the low ones making it a pleasure to listen to.

~ Tere Liye Hum Hai Jeeye~

This is a slow and dreamy number from *Veer Zaara. *I have always been a fan of Madan Mohan and when I got to know from the promos that his music has been recreated for this movie, I couldn?t wait for its release. Full credit to Javed Akthar for penning the beautiful lyrics which convey the hope and longing of love.

~ Tujhe chand chahiye~

Although Supari didn?t do much at the box office, this song became a chartbuster. A slow paced number by Vishal and Sunidhi Chauhan, this song was beautifully picturised on Uday Chopra and Nauheed.

~ Jab koyi bath bigar jaye~

The simple yet touching lyrics is the UPS of this song. Kumar Sanu performs brilliantly and completely reflects the emotions of this number.?* Na koyi tha na koyi hai zindagi me tumhare siva, tum dena sath mere?* Who can stay untouched by such soulful lyrics?

~ Chup ke se lag ja gale~

Sadhana Sargam sounds just wonderful in this soothing song from *Saathiya. *The background chorus adds a special touch to this soft number. AR Rehman and Gulzar together created this beautiful composition.

~ Chura Liya Hai Tumne jo dil ko~

This is a foot tapping duet from Yaadon ki baarat *by Asha Bhosle and Mohd. Rafi. Zeenat Aman looks ravishing while singing? badal ke meri tum zindagani, kahi badal na jana sanam?

~ Chand chupa badal me~

Ismail Darbar excelled himself in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. The music is so exquisite and soothing. This song has lovely lyrics *Chand chupa badal me sharmake mere janaa, seene se lag ja tu balkha ke mare jaana? This duet by Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan is just out of the world.

~ Tu mile dil khile~

This classic romantic song was created by Indeevar and MM Kareem for the movie Criminal. *I remember how I would keep rewinding & listening to this song again again almost driving my family nuts. The English verse *Darling, every breath you take, every move you make, I?ll be there with you? in between the song made this song different from the usual hindi songs.

~ Na tum hume jaano, na hum tumhe jaane~

Sometimes two strangers meet, feel an instant connection and draw towards each other as though some unknown force is pulling them close. Sung by Hemant Kumar, this song portrays that exact feeling.

~ Kuch na kaho, kuch bhi na kaho~

Kumar Sanu sounds absolutely stunning in this soft romantic number from 1942? A love story. I absolutely love the way this song has been picturised on Manisha Koirala and Anil Kapoor.

~ Aai ajnabi tu bhi kabhi~

This song has a haunting effect on me. This song has been sung by Udit narayan for Shah Rukh in the movie *Dil Se. *The suffering of unrequited love has been very well expressed by this talented singer.

~ Kabhi Kabhi mere dil me~

This song just seeps through the senses and touches the heart every time I listen to it. Mukesh Ji and Lata Ji has done full justice to Sahir Ludhianvi´s soulful lyrics in this wonderful creation from the movie *Kabhi Kabhi.

~ Hoton se chulo tum~

A creation by gazal maestro Jagjit Singh and Indeevar which never fails to stir the soul. Jagjit Singh?s voice sounds so heavenly as he croons *Na umr ki seema ho, na jaanm ka ho bandhan, jab piyar kare koyi to dekhe keval maan. *This song is from Anita Raj?s debut movie *Prem Geeth.

~Yeh zindagi usse ki hai~

Just like Mugal-e-Azam, *Anarkali *was also a movie on the legendary love of Prince Salim and the lovely courtesan, Anarkali. This song that I have picked would bring tears to my eyes as a child because Bina Rai as Anarkali(voice of Lata ji) sang this song while being buried alive in a wall. I would wonder how love could take away even the fear of death.

~ Khoya Khoya Chand~

What do we get when we have Shailendra, SD Burman and Mohd. Rafi together? an unparalleled song. This romantic song is from the movie *Kala Bazar *and was picturised on the evergreen Dev Anand.

~ Pal Pal Dil ke Pas~

It is said that real music is a combination of the resonance of the lyrics and the sound and this song is the perfect example of that. This song has Dharmendra cooing his love for the beautiful Rakhee through numerous love letters. A Kishore Da classic from the movie *Blackmail.

~ Chaudvi ka chand ho~

This is the memorable title track from the movie *Chaudvi Ka Chand *rendered wonderfully by Mohd. Rafi. Rafi Saab?s voice has a haunting quality to it which made his listeners sigh with pleasure. This is a tender loving song where a lover compares the beauty of his sweetheart to the moon.

~ Pehla nasha~

Soft piano music and Sandhana Sargam lovingly whispering *Chahe tum kuch na kaho, *the opening lines of this song just leaves the listener spellbound. Udit Narayan brilliantly describes the euphoria of falling in love in this Jatin-Lalit masterpiece.

Lastly,

I would have loved to add so many other songs to this list but since 20 is the limit, I must stop here. To end, I?d like to quote Shakespeare ’If music be the food of love, play on!’
