Golden Oldies

While reading a few music reviews here, I have become slightly nostalgic remembering some of the great music that was popular in the’days of my youth’.(smile) I thought I might list my all time favorite songs.

Number one would have to be TO KNOW HIM IS TO LOVE HIM by a one hit group known as the Teddy Bears. This song was released in 1859. No! that isn’t right. It was in 1958!

  1. THE TWELFTH OF NEVER by Johnny Mathis. I wanted to use this song in my wedding, but my mother said it was inappropriate. So I gave in. When my daughter was married, I tried to interest her into using it. She gave me a resounding NO. She thinks it is sappy. I STILL love it!

  2. APACHE  Jorgen Ingman( guitar number) In the eighties this song was used a lot by our high school band at sports events. It sounded even better as a band number.

4.A WONDERFUL TIME UP THERE

5.MOODY RIVER

6 THERE’S A GOLD MINE IN THE SKY

These three were all sung by Pat Boone. One of my daughters in law had never even heard of him. So I asked my daughter(who is the same age as my’d.i.l.’ if she had heard of him.

She replied:’He is some old guy who used to sing!’ Honestly! He is the same age as my husband! Who is NOT old. He has just lived a long time.(There is a subtle difference there.)

  1. I FALL TO PIECES by the late, GREAT Patsy Cline. What a rich voice she was gifted with!

  2. THE FLOWER SONG from CARMEN. Oh, to hear Luciano Pavarotti sing this one! Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!

  3. PANIS ANGELICUS by Pavarotti and Sting. This unlikely duo is quite lovely and enjoyable.

  4. MTA Recorded by The Kingston Trio, this amusing little piece tells the plight of the man who is doomed to ride the subways forever, because he doesn’t have the proper amount of fare.’ Will he ever return, will he ever return? His fate is still unlearned. He must ride forever neath the streets of Boston. He’s the man who never returned!’

  5. TOM DOOLEY also by the Kingston Trio, tells the story of a young Southerner who is condemned to die for murder. This was released in 1958 or 59.

12.THE HAWAIIAN WEDDING SONG. This was sung by Elvis Presley in the movie BLUE HAWAII.

  1. BLUE HAWAII, title song of above mentioned movie, also performed by Elvis.

  2. LOVE ME TENDER  I have to mention this lovely little tune which Elvis sang at the end of his first movie, also titled LOVE ME TENDER. The tune was adapted from the folk song, AURA LEE.

  3. I’M PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN. This song speaks for itself. I AM proud to b an American! This brings up the next song.

  4. GOD BLESS AMERICA. Long a favorite, many of us are singing this song with even more fervor, in light of the recent terrorist attacks on our beloved country.

  5. THE RIVER by Garth Brooks.

  6. THE DANCE, also by Garth. I find these two songs to be very moving and uplifting.

  7. DANNY BOY an old, old song, a favorite of my mother too.The tune to this song is the LONDONDERRY AIRE. It has been used as the melody for many different songs.

  8. SILVER AND GOLD by Dolly Parton. I love Dolly’s voice, and this is one of my favorites by her.

I hope I haven’t bored you with this little commentary. I have had fun writing it.

God bless you and God Bless America!
