I have recently seen the very eagerly awaited movie UMRAO JAAN.First of all, I am not able to understand why did JP Dutta have chosen old UMRAO JAAN tO remake.After all it was not a commercial success.It did well only in certain circuits.Old UMRAO JAAN was starring Rekha and its music was superhit.New UMRAO JAAN is starring Aishwarya Rai and its music is not as good as old one. Film is also not good as old UMRAO JAAN.
UMRAO JAAN is a story of Amiran(Aishwarya Rai) who was kidnapped and sold to kotha. She get educated there and her interest was in cultural activities.She grows and become UMRAO JAAN. She met Nawab Sultan(Abhishek Bachchan) and get separate.She meet Nawab once again but only to separate once more. Umrao Jaan is the story of journey of Umrao Jaan.
The film’s biggest drawback is that it is too slow and youthful audience tends to get bored. Whole story runs on one line and people start wondering that why story does not move on. Pace of the film tests viewer patience. Screenplay has also many defects. There is no chemistry between Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan.There reel life relation is very weak.
PERFORMANCE
Aishwarya Rai’s performance is excellent.I feel sorry for her that despite of her great performance film doesn’t works.
Abhishek Bachchan’s performance is also good.However his entry in the film is late and exit is very early.He is not seen in the last reels of the film.
Shabana Azmi’s work is exceptional.
Other casts work is also good including Anupam Kher and Sunil Shetty.
MUSIC
Anu Malik’s music is good.’Salaam’ and ’Pehle Pehel’ songs are really very good.But other songs doesn’t glow.Time was not given for the songs to grow.If they had been much better then result might be different.
Overall film does not succeed.Its first weak collection is very weak and it will bring heavy loses to distributors.
