United Bank of India, Hazra Road seem to be running a racket of fleecing poor illiterate customers.
Our maid in Kolkata had a bank account in this bank - in it’s Hazra Road Branch. She had once withdrawn Rs 15, 000/- from this branch. After 1-2 days, she had some 4 thugs from the bank who visited her place and asked her to return Rs 5, 000/- which, they claimed, had been given to her by mistake. When she protested, they threatened her with dire consequences.
After this, the next time when she visited the bank, she was surrounded by the same "gang of four" who insisted that she pays up. She again refused and then they threatened to freeze her account.
It is not understandable how the bank can take such a stand. What proof do they have that this really had happened? The banks internal ledger balance is not a proof tenable in the court of law. Had it happened the reverse way(that is if this lady had claimed that the bank has paid Rs 5, 000/- less) would that have entertained her?
Unfortunately, this particular bank seem to be targeting poor uneducated workmen & women who cannot speak English and are easier to threaten. This is the second incident I heard about this bank and this makes us think that this is not a stray incident. It is hard to ascertain whether it is something sanctioned by the bank management or is there a group of crooks within bank employees who are running this nefarious racket. Either way, best to stay away from this bank.
