Just after a couple of weeks of my marriage, I came all the way from kolkata to New Jersey, with my husband for his project purpose.
My parents, my little sister, my parents-in-laws and my sweet-old grandmother came to the airport to see us off for a miles-away journey to a somewhat unknown place…An excitement to see a foreign land and a feeling of leaving home filled my eyes. I was happy because I was in the verge of a new life, happy because of my husband but sad as well for I was missing my parents, my sister and everything else there in India with what I have grown up.
A flight of the Jet-Airways flown us from kolkata to Mumbai…For the first time I boarded an airship. It felt wonderful to look below from the air-plane, from a lower altitude the city lights looked awesome in the dark of the night. Our next flight was scheduled from Mumbai to Philadelphia via Paris…
It was around 4:30 pm when we arrived at the Philadelphia International airport. When the clock at the hotel suite struck 7:30 pm, daylight was still there, even it was there till around 8:30/9 pm, I was bit amazed to see the long-stretched day.
However, life in US started moving…for me American food is awe. We located an Indian grocery store from where we buy our daily cooking needs. Right from the beginning I searched for a little bit of Indian flavour here in US. And fortunately the place we live in has a fairly moderate Indian population.
Now after almost seven months here, we are quite acquainted with Indian restaurant, theatres where bollywood movies are shown and to top it all I have added a weekend destination to Edison’s “Oak-Tree” road, where the sidewalks are jammed with Indian stores ranging from a variety of sweets to sarees. This is an hour-drive from our place.
In the last six months I have visited a handful of places including Niagara Falls, parts of Washington DC, New York City and Philadelphia. I have encountered the severe winter here in the northern hemisphere when the mercury falls below some -17/18 degree Celsius for days. Now is the onset of summer. Trees are growing new leaves and me planning for a summer vacation.
