Calcutta University, My Alma Matre

University of Calcutta ..Advancement of Learning. These are inscribed in the University Logo having a full blown Lotus flower in the centre. I am proud of my Alma Matre. I joined the University of Calcutta in 1950 after passing B.Sc.(Hons.) in Physics from the Ravenshaw College, Cuttack, affiliated to the Utkal University. At Calcutta University I joined the Institute of Radiophysics and Electronics, for my M.Sc. degree. Our Institute was headed by Professor S. K. mitra of the Upper Atmosphere fame. Professor J. N. Bhar was also there. Professor Chatterjee, after leaving our Institute joined the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and rose to the position of its Director. Professor Satyen Bose, known all over the world for the Bose-Einstein Statistics, was also teaching us Mathematical Physics. In those days, Calcutta University was different from what it is at present. Dr. Meghnad Saha, Director of the Institute of Nuclear Physics, was also teaching us very rarely. In the Applied Physics Department, the Head was Professor P. C. Mahanti. We were twenty students in Radiophysics. I was the only one from Orissa. In the first batch was Jagadiswar Mahanti, who is no more. In my next batch there was an Oriya girl, Sudhira Das by name. Sudhira came for Radiophysics after her M.Sc. in Mathematics from Cuttack. We became very friendly, but after leaving the Institute, we have not met each other. Our University was internationally famous for Professor S. K. Mitra, Professor Satyen Bose, Acharya P. C. Ray and Professor Jagadish Chandra Bose. After having my M.Sc. in Radiophysics, I joined the Community Development Programme. Where is Radiophysics and where is Community Development? India, no doubt needs both. We used to have a lot of singing, mostly Rabindrasangeet, and Nazrul Geeti, and merry making. I was staying at the Post-graduate Hostel at 35, Ballygunge Circular Road in South Calcutta. Now when I visit Gol Park where my wife’s relatives stay, I become nostalgic and think of my glorious days at the Science College, my dear   professors and my dear friends like Sudhira, Tultul, Tuhina, Makhan, Bhabesh and Naren. And of course the Hostel Cook Mrtyunjoy who used to cook and feed us delicious Prawn Kalia.
