Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, perhaps has a one point agenda - banish English langauge from Uttar Pradesh, may be forever. But he definately has no answer as to which langauge those thousands of natives of Uttar Pradesh who want to pursue higher education abroad, for example in United States of America, United Kingdom or any Western countries, will study without English ? Does the chief minister expect the education in western countries to be imparted to the students in Hindi?
In simple and plain English, that what Mulayam Singh Yadav desires to do can be termed as an outright foolish and stupid views and thoughts, which has no logic or commonsense. English language is not a wrestling field and the students of English are not wrestlers like Yadav.
English is and remains an international langauge that is read, writtena dn spoken by billions of people around the world. Several websites of the Uttar Pradesh government are in English, his bureacurats speak more English than Hindi, millions of people from Uttar Pradesh are employed, working and settled in the Western countries, only because of English. Doesnt this chief minister know this fact? And then the chief minister who insists of imposing Hindi in his own state, is going places in the world seeking investments for his state. Does or did he speak with the government officials of the foreign countries in Hindi? I hope not. Yadav might have spoken in a broken English for sure.
And then does the Uttar Pradesh chief minister expect the global community to read the official website of the stae government in Hindi, a language which they dont know?
Mulayam Singh perhaps like to be in his dhoti (lion cloth) and the kurta, does he wish people of Uttar Pradesh to go abroad in the universities and job centers in this dress? Or in the foreign attire?
The chief minister is only making a mockery of himself and his government and in the process becoming a joker by his remarks on English. The fact remains that Yadavs own kith and kins have gone to convent educated schools, and here he was telling the others to give up the langauge.
The pathetic condition of the education in Uttar Pradesh is well known. Even if you have a Ph.D from a university, still the student with this doctorate degree cannot speak proper English. Whom do you blame for all this historics of the langauge?
Now an ill-advised chief minister is destroying the fabric or whatever remains left of the English langauge in the state by asking for the demise of the language, which is very unlikely, but what does make us burst with laughter is the mockery which the chief minister is making of himself, not only nationally but globally too.
In the state secretariat, when I react with the babus (nomianted to IAS) or senior officials there, I cannot control my laughter, when they stammer with finding word proper words in English and then flush out Hindi words.
I hope that someday some sensible and educated chief minister would correct all the wrong and ill-advised steps that the present chief minister has taken to destroy English. I am sure it would hurt those who want to fly abroad for higher education and employment, who would not be there without English.
And by the way, may I suggest to the chief minister to look around his state and count the vast majority of English schools that are growing by each day.
And inthe fitness of things, the Press advisor to the chief minister, would do a commendable job by showing the mirror to his boss and telling him, as to how he was making a mockery of himself.
