Beautiful Scenery

Veer Zaara is centrally the story of how much two people can sacrifice for their love. Veer is a Sikh Air Force pilot and Zaara is a spoiled wealthy Muslim girl from Pakistan who has recently been engaged to a boy from another politically important Muslim family. There are a lot of messages throughout the film about how India and Pakistan are actually one people and one land. The clothing is gorgeous, the landscape is inspiring, and in our home - we’ve been singing at least 5 of the songs all over the place. The plot and scenes are masterfully directed...and the story holds a lot of depth. The only defect I found was that as a Hindu director, I find that Yash Chopra doesn’t realistically reflect the behavior or mentality of Muslim women. The comment by Zaara that ’’I will have done something important if I have helped someone reach salvation’’ is a bit silly if she is a Muslim...because Muslims do not believe that throwing a cremated body into a river will get anyone to salvation. Nor would she be at Sikh temples doing prayers with her nanny...because it is strictly forbidden in the Islamic faith for Muslims to pray to idols or saints. That is characteristic of Hindu behavior in Bollywood cinema. Nonetheless, very poignant love story.
