So, atlast I watched a brilliantly made movie in theater, which I was eager to go right from the beginning, and has read about so many accolades its getting, Better late than never! The movie is "Vicky Donor" from John Abrahams Production house and directed by Shoojit Sircar. And wow! it was brilliant, everything just went so smoothly that not a moment I felt bored, and I thoroughly enjoyed the movie.
Its a story of Vicky Ahuja (Ayushman Khurana), the typical Punjabi family boy, who is looking for a good job, not any job, but a job which have some respect. But he ends up doing a job, which does not look good in conservative societys eyes, and he cant even discuss with it anybody - Sperm Donation. Reason - Dr. Baldev Chadha (Annu Kapoor), the fertility expert, who sees everybody in a sperm avatar. He has a lot of patients waiting at his clinic, who just wanted a sperm so that they can become parents, but he is not able to find a good-quality sperm donor. Then se saw Vicky, and lo! his expert eyes identifies him in just a single moment - Yes! he is the one, laakhon mein ek. He started following him everywhere, and always runs behind him to get his sperm, until he says yes. Vicky needs money, and Dr.Chadha needs sperms, Problem solved! But whats if he come to know that he cant have his own son after marriage, just because his wife, a banker in profession, Ashima Roy (Yami Gautam) cant bear a child because of her unsupported body. And he even hide his original profession from his wife. Its all about that and many more.
I must say, a brilliant idea for a story, and what a thinking, with a message to give, without preaching the same. Treatment of the movie is brilliant. The director Shoojit handled the plot very very well, and not a single moment of boringness comes. He brilliantly blended the comedy and emotions together, where 1st half is pure comedy, 2nd half is equally emotional, and the transition, just so smooth, that you wonder, if youre watching a bollywood movie, and he even able to gave the message without preaching it, like many movies does, and fails. I had read a news about a sudden increase in sperm donation activity in reality after the release of this movie, now thats something great, isnt it. Previously Shoojit has given us Yahaan. Juhi Chaturvedi, you has given us a brilliant story to see it coming true on screen . Wonderful dialogues to support, direct dialogues are said, which actually did maintain the magic of movie, with the perfect Punjabi and Bangali accent/dialect, and which adds the perfect spice to the movie - na kam na jyaada! Scenes are well incorporated, the Punjabi-Bangali culture dialogue fight was damn good, and hilarious, wonderfully shows the difference, and that too without creating any drift between the two cultures! What if, we all live happily in our lives too, just respecting or criticizing each others varied culture with an open heart and accept each others faiths too. Songs are melodious, and well-placed too. "Pani da rang vekhke" (sung by Ayushman Khurana and Sukanya Purkayastha), "Mar Jaiyan", "Chadha", "Rum Whiskey", and "Rokda", all are nice songs, beautifully composed by Abhishek-Akshay, and penned by Swanand Kirkire. The feel never goes from the movie. On top of it all, the other best thing of the movie was Annu Kapoor, man! hes a genious actor, and what a performance given by him in the role of a doctor, who wants to do everything right but not getting a donor. His looks quite similar to the editor role from Mr India, and there as well as here, he was just awesome, a real actor, and a perfect mentor for our main rising star, the MTV VJ Ayushman Khurana. Ayushman is a brilliant actor, giving just the original expression, nothing too dramatic, just natural, and he has a long way to go, and its a debut for him. It seems that the roles are tailor-made for them, nobody can do better in these characters, except Annu and Ayushman. Bhupesh Pandya (assistant of Dr.Chadha, Dr.Chaman, the unpredictable sperm) done a good job alongwith Dolly Ahluwalia (Vickys mother), and a lovely role done by Kamlesh Gill (Biji of Vikky), marvelous. The actor who did the role of Ashimas father was also good, and Ashima, i.e. Yami also come good in her debut movie. Movie looks a bit slow in the 2nd half, but still I must say it was much better than many, and a must watch.
If you havent seen it, watch it, its almost a month now from its release, at some places, its still hanging on, doing good business, otherwise get CD/DVD or catch it on TV, but do watch it for sure, a not-to-miss movie. My take 4.5/5, check out the ideal sperm!
