Twas our book discussion clubs choosing for the merry month of May and Jeff and I enjoyed this immensely. Although, when it actually came down to discussing the book with the others, I had to stop and wonder at myself;
Cassie Black was a criminal - shed just done 5 years for murder - she didnt really kill the guy - he was her fiance - it was somebody else who killed him - but she was in the act of a crime with her fiance when he got killed.
Howd he die? Well, one of the other bad guys actually pushed him out of a penthouse suite that belonged to a casino hotel - he crashed through the skylight and onto the casino tables.
She was out on parole and was working for a car dealer. She didnt really want to do another job, but her mentor - Leo (kind of a father figure) was waiting to hear from her.
She had a daughter that shed given birth to in prison and she dearly wanted to kidnap the child from the adoptive parents and skip out of the country.
So she called up Leo who set her up on a job.
Well, the job entailed robbing a guy who would be a guest at the very same casino where the last mishap occurred.
Now her mentor - Leo - was very superstitious - the last mishap had occurred under the void moon - and this was what she had to avoid.
Well, I dont want to tell the whole story - but I do want to tell about the talent of the author;
When a writer makes his reader identify with the criminal, then that writer is good - even though I knew Cassie was a thief and would cause the death of others by her own foolishness, I identified with her right till the end - I rooted for her on every page.
Ill agree that there were a few holes in the story, but I enjoyed it just the same.
I hope youll give it a try.
Carly :-)
