Entertaining

Wake Up Sid, another offering from KJo i.e. Karan Johar - The producer-director who is known for his style and has established his own brand name.

And does the movie carry the brand name? Yes, very well. It has good fashion, good look & feel, lots of light humor, little bit of crying, little bit of family drama, everything that a typical KJo movie offers. And then it also has something which a KJo movie does not offer. some good script!

I was surprised to find out that the first show was already houseful, one day before the release! The movie must have got a good opening, at least in the multiplexes.

As regards the movie, the first half is engrossing and does not have noticeable flaws.The second half is a bit slow and a bit of an anticlimax. but still there are some spontaneous moments even in the second half.The ending is not up to the mark. it reminded me a lot of Luck By Chance.

The first half sets the expectations such that we expect Sid to do something really big in his life. but in the end he just turns out to be a normal guy with a regular job.I do feel the movie should have shown Sid’s journey till he achieves some success in his career and not just till he gets a job for himself. Anyway.

The love story is woven beautifully and subtly. but again the ending seems somewhat out of sync.

One more thing I happen to notice is that there are hardly any important male characters in the film, besides Ranbir. And there are females everywhere. He has 2-3 female friends, 1 girlfriend, 2 female neighbors, a mother and so on. Probably which is why the movie seems more like a TV serial. like Hum Paanch / Dekh Bhai Dekh types. It does not have a balanced feel like Lakshya(which is based on a similar theme)

Girls will like this movie definitely.(I can vouch because the plex was full of girls. And all of them were seated till the last shot of Ranbir, well, including me!). But I wonder if there is anything for the male audience?

I would still rate it as one of the best scripts from KJo’s house. His other movies have not received much critical acclaim although they have always enjoyed a repeat audience. But, unlike all the previous movies, Wake Up Sid is a good combination of both, something for the critic within you and something for the masala audience within you.

*Ranbir Kapoor:

========*

Ranbir is the one major reason to watch this film.Ranbir acts very well. He portrays the many moods of Sid with style.He presents Sid as a cute, lovable yet very ’bigda hua’ rich guy. His dialogue dilevery is superb. He brings smiles many times simply because the way he says his lines. And, no need to say, he looks stunning!

*Other Aspects:

========*

Acting: Acting wise, Ranbir is the best. Konkona is good. Anupam Kher, Supriya Pathak are convincing as caring parents. Rahul Khanna is very repetitive and his voice sounds a lot like Akshay Khanna. Other people are mostly new.

Direction: Good. All characters look their part. The film scores well in many aspects, so. Director Ayan Mukerji has done a good job.

Editing: Very Good. The mixing of some scenes is really nice.

Story: Story is good but kind of predictable.

Music: Music is melodious. Iktara song is the best.

Costumes: Ranbir’s costumes are superb. Konkona’s costumes are also good and suit her character very well. The costumes of other characters are also memorable.

Art Direction: Nice. Superb sets. Even the shots of ordinary places in Mumbai are done beautifully.

Dialogues: Very Good. My favorite,

Ranbir(To his fat friend): Hey, don’t be so upset with your weight! You are not an elephant.

The Girl(Crying): I know.

Ranbir: Maybe you are a Buffalo!

Verdict: The film cannot become a Blockbuster, because it lacks the impact of say, a Krrish or a Ghajni. It cannot become a Flop, because it is engrossing for a good amount of time. It should become a Hit or a Semi-Hit. Let’s see if the guess is right!

Rating: Overall, it is a good movie, hence.3.2 / 5

Enjoy,

Simran
