Back From The Brink Of Destruction

Warsaw is a fascinating city which has risen from the destruction of World War 2 and the years of oppression under Communism.

There is a good public transport system within the city - underground, trams and buses. The bus services are 24 hours in many cases though the prices are increased after 11pm.

Eating out is a difficult choice as there are so many restaurants and cafes to choose from. Typical Polish cuisine is on offer alongside Mexican, Italian, Chinese, Vietnamese and Lebanese. Of course you can also find the standard fast food joints of Mc Donalds, Burger King, and KFC.

Accommodation in the city ranges from the 5 star Bristol to youth hostels and basic accommodation. Usually it is offered at reasonable prices.

Nightlife is varied - cinemas showing films in their original language (with the exception of children’s films) and include recent releases, theatres, nightclubs with all music tastes catered for and plenty of bars.

Places of interest in the city are:

  • Lazienzki Park - a beautiful park which was the former summer residence of one of the former Kings. There is a palace within the park and a lake.

  • The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier - the arch is all that remains of the Saxon Palace that was destroyed during World War II. It gives an indication of the destruction which occurred in the city.

  • The Old Town - which has been rebuilt in its original style with narrow streets.

  • Modern Art Centre - in Ujazdowski Castle. There are some fantastic modern works of art and the cafe is almost as interesting because of the interior design.

  • Wilanow Palace - on the outskirts of the city is a former Royal residence. There are some magnificent gardens to wander around and there is a huge poster museum in one of the outbuildings.
