Just for the Ladies

After I graduated from secondary school at age 18, I joined the ranks of what is known as’couch potato’.  I began to eat more junk food, and exercise less outside.  After the summer, I noticed I was as plump as a spring chicken.  My friend noticed this too, and invited me to the gym she began to attend.

Just Ladies Fitness is as the name suggests.  It is a gym where women educate and help women attain their goals in a healthy and private atmosphere.  This is because women have more of a complex about their weight and working out than men.  The lack of members of the opposite sex makes it easier to work out as you’re not so worried about how you look, but about having fun while you’re doing it.

The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable.  To work there, one has to have a background in fitness and nutrition(unless cleaning the bathrooms or caring for the children).  The women there make strong efforts to get to know everyone that works out there on a personal level.  They became my trusted circle of mentors in my quest to battle the bulge.

When I joined this club, I received a one-on-one consultation with a qualified staff member.  The lady I met with had a degree in nutrition and physical fitness.  I felt immediately comfortable, and discussed why I wanted to lose weight, my goals, how I thought I could achieve those goals, my eating and exercise habits, and any health issues.  She, in turn, gave me an inspiring speech on how to change my eating habits and what to eat(by using the Canadian Food Guide).

I was led into the exercise room and showed every piece of equipment before taking the fitness test.  The test was me trying everything to see what I could do, and what would work for me in a routine.  As a hygiene-conscious person, I noticed everything was spotless.  This is because staff disinfects the equipment every hour, and the members have to wipe seats and handles with towels after every use.  Also, everything was in perfect working order.  Broken machines were replaced immediately.

This gym belongs to a chain group, and has many different sites.  Each site has different things.  My gym had a circuit, weight lifting, cardio machines, class room, tanning, and child care.  A circuit is alternating cardio with weight machines every 30 seconds.  It claims to reduce heart disease and lower weight faster than regular work outs.  Classes you could take included step, yoga, aerobics, power ball, tae bo, aerobic weightlifting, spinning, and many others.

Other sites have the same amenities as my location, including massage therapists, pool, whirlpool, and other classes that aren’t available at all locations.  With a membership to one location, however, you could visit all locations and enjoy all amenities.

My favorite class is power ball.  At first, I was the only member in the class, besides the teacher!  It involves an exercise ball and aerobics.  It starts out with stretches over the ball and move to light floor workout.  Sometimes you hold the ball in the air, or bounce it on the floor.  Either way, you are working your arm muscles because those balls are heavy!  For toning, we do pushups and situps on the ball.  For balance, we form various almost-yoga positions on the ball and try to balance on top without rolling onto the floor.  This isn’t an easy class, but it is most rewarding to see the all-over toning and weight loss.

This gym is wonderful for every shape and size of woman.  One can exercise here, meet friends, who can counsel you and support you to accomplish your goals.
