This is probably one of the best musicals of all time. I personally, am a big fan of musicals, and although I wouldn’t call this one of my favorites in comparison to others, I can respect its story.
This has been compared to Romeo and Juliet, because a Hispanic girl falls in love with an American boy. Her brother and his gang have an ongoing dispute with the American gang, so obviously their love can never be.
As with alot of musicals, some of the songs are simply amusing due to the upbeat melodies and dancing thrown into a serious movie. But that just adds to the greatness of the film, in that it doesn’t take itself too seriously, which is a good thing.
For some, this movie would probably have trouble holding your interest. It has it’s boring parts that tend to drag on (as well as musical numbers for that matter), but overall the movie is interesting, and you’d end up watching until the end just to see what happens with the young lovers.
