It came up because of its simplicity user interface and also the Instant messaging .!
it was launched in 2011 when android was in developing state and whatsapp was the only messenger that gave instant messaging the concept of whatsapp was to have chatting for only personal contacts!
Whatsapp evolved and upgraded and now have some cool features I use whatsapp from past 3 years and I havent yet paid their yearly charge each time they push a year forward and thus having free of cost!
The call feature is superb but it fails on mobile internet services but works like buttery smooth if on any WiFi network!
