The Microcosmic World of Bugs

The Microcosmic World of Bugs

So you thought bugs, chipkalis (lizards), and mosquitoes only existed in India! Well, think again?

The movie Yaadein gives us a glimpse into the lives

of foreign bugs of Indian descent. The bugs are divided into two families - The Grasshoppers (Hrithik’s family) and The Beetles (Kareena?s family) . Why, beetles do you ask? Well, this family just loves to sing, weep and dance. So what’s the problem?

Blame Darwin for the problem!

Bulging bug, Hrithik Roshan, goes out of his niche and falls in love with one of the Beetle family’s daughter’s, Lola Beetle . Inspite of Bulging Bug, being buddy-buddy with the doped or drunk Papa Beetle (Jackie Shroff), trouble’s on the horizon. Papa Beetle has started doubting love marriages after the failed marriage of one of his daughter’s, whom we will just refer to as, Needs-to-see-a-dentist beetle . After being harassed by the grasshoppers, Papa Beetle gives up hope.

The reason: The grasshopper?s think they are taller than the beetles (ahem, in terms of status and wealth). Even in the midst of all these trite, bugging events, the beetles and the grasshoppers munch on their two favorite snacks: Pass Pass and Coca-Cola !

So why did this movie bug me to no end?

1) The bugs overacted, yeah so did Bulging Bug!

2) Over-the-top portrayal of NRI’s. Who has 5 different Ferraris?

3) The movie was clearly financed by Coca-Cola and Pass Pass.

4) Monishka Mosquito (the girl whom the Grasshopper’s want as their bahu). A complete irritant with zero acting ability!

5) The bugs could not even fake a foreign accent properly!

However, on a positive note, the song, dance and choreography impressed! Each song is a treat! Watch out for the title track, Jab Dil Mile and Eli Re Eli, a song that tests the durability of drapery, upholstery, etc. In the songs, Hrithik moves with the true spirit of a lithe, chitinous grasshopper. He looks absolutely dashing. The theme of the movie deals with a real issue: Love vs. Money, an issue that manifests itself into almost everyone’s lives today! The grasshoppers represent the snooty, business family who equate marriage to a business transaction. The Beetles epitomize a down-to-earth, simple family. The camera effects are awesome! London, Malaysia and Udaipur look absolutely enchanting!

So what happens? Does money win, or does love? The answer is pretty obvious and that makes the movie predictable.

But still go take a beady look at the movie, while I return to my Biology textbooks...and dream about the Bulging Bug a little more...sigh...
