Yeh meri life hai, isme comedy hai, isme tragedy hai, action hai... jo ki
ek hindi film blockbuster mein hota hai. Par yeh koi hindi film nahin, yeh
meri life hai - says Pooja the protoganist of the serial Yeh Meri Life hai.
( This is my life, which has all ingredients of a blockbuster hindi movie but
this is not a movie, this is my life)
From 3rd May a new show is being aired on Sony Entertainment Television(SET) -
Yeh Meri Life Hai. It is aired from Mon-Thur 10 p.m. after Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin
and Repeat Telecast is from 7:30 p.m to 8:00 p.m
This serial is not about joint families, saas-bahu saga. It belongs to the category of
Jassi Jaisi koi nahin. The average woman is in the limelight. It is a story of a 17 year
old girl, called Pooja, belonging to Gujrati household staying in suburbans Mumbais
Ghatkopar. Yes Yes it does talk about Dhokla, khandvi, thepla as in Virani parivar
of Saas bhi kabhi bahu thi. But the similarity ends there.
Yeh meri life hai is about Pooja. She has just finished her 12th and has joined a new college
to learn dramatics. It is about her dream of becoming a director, a successful one, just like Karan-Johar
(of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham fame). It takes you the St Martins
college (where it seems Karan johar studied. He made appreance on the show in the
beginning). It is about how she adjusts in the so-called hep college, where mostly
kids from rich families join. How few of them , namely Annie and Kaushal , make fun
of her. At every step they bring up the differences. Well seeing the serial makes me
nostalgic, woh din bhi kya din they . Yes I didnt meet as snobbish as Annie but then
you do get to meet different kind of characters in college and you do have to make adjustments.
Someone making fun of you because say you cant speak proper English or for your
dress sense.
Well coming back to YMLH. It is not only about the college. It is also about her middle-class
family, her friends. She has one elder sister married, another for whom groom-hunting is
going on, a younger brother who is in school but enjoys cooking. Her father, a businessman,
is orthodox whose aim is to get his daughters married off (like Mrs. Bennett in
Pride and Prejudice). He is the head of family who lays down all rules, no phone calls from boys,
getting back from college by 6:00 p.m). Her mother is a typical housewife, obedient asks her
children to respect the father wishes. But she supports her childrens dream. There is a bindu
like Buaa(fathers sister). Whenever she enters song hai hai mirchi is played in background.
She tries to create problems in family.
Jahan Jahan Pooji paaji wahan wahan Mandi paji(Wherever is Pooji there is Mandy).
Mandy, or Mandeep, is a Punjabi neighbor who is always with Pooja. She even joins St. Martins to
be with Pooja. Their friendship is portrayed very beautifully.
The serial till now is good. It is a deliberate attempt by Sony to move away from kitchen politics.
They are targeting the middle-class families. The woman of today, who wants to pursue her dreams.
The characters are simple, one you can identify with. There is little bit of everything.
Sometime back there was boogie-woogie competition in college. They dont drag a story for
too long. And I see it because my daughter likes it a lot.
