Yercaud then and now.

It is a small hill station some 25 kms from Salem with a ghat road in very good condition. The authorities make sure that they do the maintanance as frequent that it does not get damaged. This was not the condition some twenty years back. It was very small roads then and traffic bottleneck and road blocks were regular during seasons.

But then it was lush green all over. From the first bend itself you could feel the difference in climate and the feeling that you are going to a hill station. Now unlimited tree felling has given it a bald look in some areas. last week when we went again we felt very bad because in the hill top many areas were exposed with bare earth viscible. The area near Sterling resort and Gent’s seat were completely cropped. You can see those land marks even from the bends which was not the case before. The only place which gives real shade from the scortching sun is the Rose Garden where there is very big trees in large numbers. Hope atleast that area will be maintained so that visitors can spend the midday there. Rose Garden has many rose sapplings and some other plant cuttings and pot plants for sale. But as if to make it clear that it is a goverment property no pots are watered properly and some of them have started to wither out.

In summer many from salem come for a day out and the whole area is very busy and conjusted in day time.

But still if you are staying in any cottage (of course cheap compared to other hill stations) nights are really good with calm atmosphere and clean air.You can have quite walks in the evening and early morning when almost all roads will be empty except for the fellow tourists like you.

Rain in this hill station is really enjoyable. You can stay in your cottage and enjoy it. It is better to go to Yercaud in The months after rainy season when whole area will have a wet look with green all around.
