This 119 minute comedy-romance starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan was released in 1997. It received a PG rating due to some language being deemed unsuitable for children under the age of 13.
Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan), owns a small, but somewhat famous childrens bookstore. She is in a relationship with a journalist but finds intrigue with a man she meets anonymously in a chat room while online. She an her online friend spend every available minute e-mailing (thus the title) and soon their relationship blooms, although they have never met.
Kathleen meets Joe Fox (Tom Hanks), son of the owner of Fox Books, a large discount store which will be located around the corner from her store. She is incensed at how the Fox Chain puts smaller stores out of business and finds Joe to be irritating and egotistical.
The two do not like each other from the first meeting. They continue e-mailing their e-mail pen-pals and discuss issues honestly without ever disclosing who they are. Finally the relationship progresses and the two discover that the person they have been e-mailing is someone they know and despise!
The movies plot is pretty predictable. However, I found myself waiting to see what they would disclose in the e-mails to each other. I enjoyed the movie but felt it was a little long in parts, however it was necessary to the plot development.
This movie is worth taking a look at on video on a rainy day or when you are a little down and wonder if you will ever meet the right person for you!
