Can't Even Kill A Rat

This is my third filmy review and so I have reviewed this movie in a new format just for the sake of not being repetitive. I hope you all find it insightful if not entertaining. I have revealed a substantial portion of the plot and since the movie has the pretensions of a suspense thriller, those who are seriously planning to watch the movie, skip the plot component of this review.

So here goes:

Cast:   Imraan Hashmi as Siddarth Mehra (the hero)

Samita Shetty as Sonia Mehra (the heroine)

Udita Goswami as Anna (the vamp)

Sameer Kochhar as Sean (the villain)

Ninad Kamath as James (sidekick for the hero)

The Characters:

Siddarth Mehra: Estranged husband of Sonia Mehra and impetuous hot-tempered Police officer in an idyllic town in Goa.

Sonia Mehra: Uptight and estranged Wife of Siddarth Mehra with feministic inclinations, and a Police Officer as well.

Anna: A seductress by nature, wife of Sean and textbook case for domestic violence.

Sean: A man of unknown professional background and wife beater.

James: A policeman and a close friend and confidant of Siddarth Mehra

Performance of Cast

As Siddarth the cop Imraan Hashmi does so-so job, however manages to squeeze some zeher into Siddarth’s character. Samita as the uptight feminist is very good. Her jaws tighten whenever she has an argument with Siddarth, which I felt was pretty good. Udita Goswami as the sympathy seeking seductress-Anna is barely ok. Sameer Kochhar as the wife beating Sean is no more scary than Santa Claus. Ninad Kamath as James is his usual oily self and does a decent job as Siddarth’s sidekick.

The Plot (People who wish to see the movie, please skip this part)

Siddarth and Sonia have separated for more than a few months and are going through the agony of separation. The reason for the split being that Sonia feels, Siddarth is trying to screw up her life by making her pregnant and that the baby will act as the chowkidar (security guard) to ensure that she stays inside the house with no career, and aborts her child.

In a drug bust Siddarth nets around 87 lakhs in cash and some cocaine. One night on the way home he encounters Anna who is suffering from some sort of giddiness and stomach cramps. Siddarth offers her a ride home and later finds that Sean, an old acquaintance is her husband. Siddarth dosen’t like the way Sean treats Anna and so the seeds of attraction between Anna and Siddarth are sown. One night when Sean is not around, Anna calls Siddarth to her house on a false pretext and seduces him. This happens many more times until she tells him that she is pregnant and that the child is his.

When they visit the hospital together for the pregnancy report, the doctor informs Anna that her cancer has returned and that though treatment is possible the success rate is only 40%. Siddarth feels obliged to help Anna escape the sadistic clutches of Sean and seek treatment in Bombay. So he gives her the drug money for her treatment. When he returns to her house that evening he dosen’t find anyone there. Once home he receives a call that the Anna’s house is on fire. He then finds her and Sean’s semi-charred remains and the drug money is missing. Now to add to his list of woes, Sonia has been made the chief investigator of this terrorism/arson case and a narcotics officer is on his back for the drug money. The rest of the story is how Siddarth gets out of the mess.

Production Values

The locales are very good and typically Goan. Anna’s house is the same one used in the movie ‘Musafir’. Only one song is really good and there are very few action scenes. The movie feels low budget and must have been shot on a tight schedule. Editing is ok and so is the camera work..

My Comments

Udita Goswami doesn’t look seductive, Imraan dosen’t have a tough cop image and the songs aren’t great. All in all the movie has a little something and a lot of nothing.
