Of Dance and the G Spot

“Ab hamaari nayi bahu hame dance karke dihayegi” some old aunty after I reached my sasural post rona dhona bidaai.

The song that was on was “It’s the time to disco” from KHNH. Having never been the sharmili variety, I got up and did my jig! The only thing I was worried about was my saree coming off doing the twist.

“Tumhe kisi sharif gaane pe bhi dance karma aata hai?” another aunty.

Sigh…

There are some things in the world that give you immense joy and make you forget everything else, even yourself at times. It’s as if you are just you without any masks that you put on for being a part and parcel of the society. For me that one thing is dancing! I am not a trained dancer, neither do I think I dance well or something. But it is one thing that liberates me, makes me feel free, happy and in the groove, I may say so literally.

I remember as a kid, trying to do a ball dance with a friend on “Ae dil hai mushkil jeena yahan” and trying to repeat Javed Jaffery’s steps in Gold Spot - The Zing Thing ad which was then a rage!

If there’s music around somewhere, my feet starting tapping, my shoulders start moving, so much so, that my friends wouldn’t let me stand on a bus stop that had some tapri playing jhankar beats wallah remix music on it. Yet, I was never a party animal. The only times I would dance was in confines of my home, at family gatherings and the college fests that happened once in a year!

But Bangalore is known as the city of gardens and watering holes of another kind. So when we came here, we had to check out a few places where the yuppies in Bangalore hang out! The first disco / lounge / resto-bar (whats the difference anyway?) we went was Zero Gravity more popularly known as Zero G.

Situated on the top most floor of the ABN Amro building on Residency Road, Bangalore, Zero G tries to take you so high enough in every sense in the term that you will not feel gravity when you are there.

They have a small open air area which has the bar with techno looking neon blue and red bottles placed across the length of the bar. The bar is well stocked with all the popular darus and the required samagri for the classic and the latest cocktails. Teetotalers like me hardly have any choice with the total number of mocktails they have is FOUR.

They have seating around the structure with most of them being tables for 4, can squeeze in six and two large round tables for bigger groups. They also have a propah restaurant in the same area, which I have never tried and a pool side area which they give primarily for private get togethers in larger numbers.

One of the best things at this place is their starters! Their spread of vegetarian and non vegetarian entrees is superb. A must try is Mushroom Tokez, which are fresh mushrooms stuffed with spicy cheese. It has converted many a die hard mushroom haters. The Chilly Garlic Fish is succulent with its fiery taste. You can also order their veg or non veg platters where you can have a choice of 3 starters in a combo platter which could save you close to 150 bucks. Each starter costs anywhere Rs.130 – Rs.160 and the quantity isn’t exactly humongous, so you can calculate it as one starter per person.

D J Hussain rocks most nights with his mixed music. Wednesdays are Bollywood Nites and Fridays and Saturdays are Hip Hop Nites and retro music lover can chill on Thursdays with their favourite oldies. The place is usually open till Cinderella’s clock turns twelve, what with crazy laws in the SillyCon city.

You will see a mix of people of all ages, but mainly young office goers who come to party harder after a hard day at work. The dance floor usually gets full by 930 and sees some brilliant dancing that sets the floor on fire.

The cover charge is 500 bucks per couple, and they allow stags only if accompanied by at least one couple. The cover is fully redeemable against your drinks or starters. One trip to this place should set you back by 1000 bucks per person.

Go try what Zero Gravity feels like!

While this is totally unrelated to the review it’s my favourite phrase which goes like this;

“Gravity is a myth, Life Sucks!”
