I decided to post this blog when I came accross all types of fraudulent methods involved in a second hand or used cars market out there in cities like mumbai, delhi, noida, etc.
I am a regular follower of olx and quikr coz I like to know the current resale value of each and every car and their brands, just to have an idea about it. Just a time pass:P as I am interested in automobile industry .
So all these started when my dad wanted a car as he was granted a loan for buying a car. He is also interested in automobiles but used to be busy most of the time in office so he assigned this job of buying a second hand car to me.
I started searching for used cars in about all the possible websites like gaadi.com, cartrade.com, olx, quikr.
It took about two months to come to a conclusion that its not easy to buy a good used vehicle
I will let you know why.this is all about my experience and nothing offensive.
It all started with olx and quikr, I started looking out for ads of cars which were less driven like around 50k km and models of >2007 .
I used to prefer buying it from an individual than a dealer because an individual may have the service records and he/she may be more specific about the vehicle they are selling.
I was more interested about honda city zx(dolphin model) and my father was interested in toyota corolla 1.8 . I used to call the individual and ask some details which were missing in the ad and which I wanted to know about like the insurance and tyres etc. And then I used to go to that place and take a trial of the car.
But after some experiences I started asking them if the car is registered in their name or not. Because you cannot believe somebody saying this car belongs to my friend and he wants me to sell it. These types of cases are 99% fake dont even dare to buy these types of cars.
One of my experience was I saw an ad of honda city done only 65k and wanted to see the vehicle and I was asked to come to a society after I reached there the person showed me the vehicle and I started inspecting it, he asked me to drive it and see. I did that too. Then he started boasting that he has two more honda accords and he doesn't have time to drive them. Practically thinking which dumbhead would buy two cars of the same model and drive them both? and I asked for the papers of honda city. He hesitated that all the papers are clear this that and all but I said I want to see the papers now. What I saw was amazingly superb:P
the car was in the name of some person and the insurance was expired a year ago but it was in the name of some other person other than the name in RC and the sale letter was in some other person's name.
I straight away came back and ignored his calls. This is a trick of keeping some person's vehicle in a society's parking place so that we will think this car belongs to a decent person. But that is actually a business. All those cars belong to some dealer and the person who is living in the society gets some 2-3k for selling the car.
People may be thinking that the cars being sold by dealers are all genuine. it is definitely NOT.
I can say strongly with my personal experience.
I know that a set of tires last 40-50k km for any car. And if the person says it has done only 60k km then it should have second set of cars and that set should be almost new.
Tampering the odometer is very simple and prominent in the cars being sold by dealers.
I have seen a toyota corolla which was previously owned by some contractor and was of 2005 model and it had only 55k km, the tires had some 20% tread in it. that means it is not the first set neither the second or the odometer has been tampered and set back. NEVER believe when the dealer says it is certified and genuine mileage. These are all bullshit.
In another experience, I saw the ad of a honda city which had 90k on its odometer and had all the service records. I thought of making a deal because it was price some 20k below the current market value. before I reached there, a dealer bought that car and I was told the same by the owner. But I remembered the number of the vehicle. After some 10 days I saw another ad of the same vehicle saying it has done only 65k km and priced at 50k more than that it was posted before. I wanted to get a closer look on the vehicle and I went to that dealer and asked for all the papers first. The car was the one I saw previously but I did not tell him that I have seen it already. Unknowingly he gave me another paper of the car which was its service record in which the odometer reading was 65,744km . I wanted to try and drive the car. As I sat in the car and turned the key on, the odo says 64,670km:P . I got it confirmed that its very easy to tamper the odometer. Then I even told that dealer that the odometer has been tampered and in a "nowhere-to-go" situation he accepted it.
So be carefull while buying a second hand car and dont get cheated.
Dont believe anyone out there and try it for yourself.
