If our sources are correct, then Hyundai might be planning to launch the i30 premium hatchback in India this Diwali. The car will be priced in the 7- 9 lakh bracket, which might be an impediment to its success.

The car was initially unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt International Motor Show. The company has updated it quite a few times since then. The i30 is available in three versions – a three door hatchback, a five door hatchback and an estate. India will only get the five door version. The company spokesperson told the Financial Express that i20 was the finest hatchback in the country, but they believe that there is room for premium hatchbacks and by the year end India will get one. Globally, the i30 is offered with four engine options -1.6-litre MPi, 1.6-litre GDi, 1.8-litre MPi and a 1.6-litre VGT.

All these engines power the front wheels through either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic gearbox. For India though, Hyundai might offer the i30 with smaller capacity and a more efficient range of engines.

The Car is known for its easy maneuverability in congested city environments along with the space of a mid size sedan. Hyundai has also been preparing to enter the lucrative compact SUV segment with the ix25.

Hatchbacks make up the largest chunk of the car market in India holding more that 68% of the market share. The i30 once launched will rival the Jazz, Cross Polo and Corolla hatchback along with compact SUV’s like Ecosport and Duster.
