The book I read to research this post was Crested Gecko by Lance Jepson which is an excellent book which I bought from a local bookshop. Crested Geckos are found on New Caledonia which was discovered by Captain Cook & named after Scotland because it had similiar rugged terrain. Crested Geckos were identified as a species when some dead samples were sent to Paris in the 19th Century. Unfortunately their location where they were found wasn't very precise. In the 1990's an attempt was made to locate them because it was thought they could be exported as potential pets. This was initially unsuccessful but eventually they were located. They are reasonably small & make good pets. They are nocturnal but need plenty of warmth & ultra violet lamps. The bulbs should be changed every 6-8 months & it should be bore in mind that we are unable to see ultraviolet light so even if they do seem bright they probably do still need changing. A recent development is lights which provide the correct amount of heat & light. The bulbs should be specifically for reptiles because the wrong ones can damage their eyes & skin also they should be rated no more than 2.0. They like to climb things & many breeders try to give them something as close to their natural habitat as possible. The best way to do this is to have water at the bottom then a sheet of nontoxic plastic the type used for bullfrogs is ideal. Then you have a layer of substrate & have a few native plants growing in it. You need to make holes in the plastic but must not get the substrate water logged.
