Edakkal caves is one of the enchanting, breathtaking and exhausting trekking adventure in Wayanad. One has to climb steep pathways, in some places through an iron railing. In certain enroute one has to enter through the cave portion only in single file i.e. only one person can enter the pathway and further proceed. It is supposed to be 3000 years old. It is about 28kms from Kalpetah N.H.212 and may be plus l5 kms from Sulthan Batheri. One can find that the Kalpetah is the nearest hub for visiting many tourist attractions in Wayand. Once you reach the Edakkal cave entry point one has to travel in a jeep provided by the Govt., of Kerela who charge Rs.60 for a group of six which takes you through rugged terrain to the ticket counter of the Edakkal caves. The rugged journey itself is very thrilling. A charge of Rs.10 per person is charged in the ticket counter for climbing to the Edakkal caves. Then the exhausting journey starts. It takes about half an hour to fortyfive minutes and the trek is really enthralling compared to other trekking places in Wayanad. One has to climb through winding rails in single file and it will be a taxing effort especially for aged persons. I think it is not advisable for any patient especially heart patients to attempt the climb. Sooner you reach a point where you can stretch for a while which is the final phase for entering the caves. From this place one has to enter in single file to the caves which goes down. One can see murals etched in stone, the pictures of King and Queen and their advisors along with stone etching conveying messages which are in a different 'lipi'.(language). The cave is a natural formation and cannot be called a cave in its totality as a stone has got into two stone pillars, if we may say so, and has formed an umbrella converting the place into a cave. There is a trekking point , in the final phase, from the place where one can 'stretch' and the trek is too steep to attempt. But we were told that of late permission is not granted now a days. During our visit it was drizzling and overcast and we could not videograph the cave inside as it was totally dark inside. In all one must not fail to visit this place as this place gives one of the very best trekking experience. A video has been attempted outside the caves and exhibited.
