Rani: - You are a Bengali? But your surname is pronounced as SAI, where the letter ‘N’ remains silent and works as the ‘Chandrabindu’ of Bengali alphabet. I have hardly seen any Bengali people having that SAIN surname? Can you please tell me any history about your ancestors, so that we can have a clear idea about your surname?
Arindam: - Ha ha ha, frankly speaking, our ancestors were also Bengali people. And Yes, Sain is very much a Bengali title. You are not the first person to ask this question to me. Many people have asked it earlier also. Actually, our ancestors were the Zamindars of Midnapore district under the British rule. My great grandfather was a School Headmaster, as you can easily understand that at those times Midnapore was the most educated district of Bengal.
Saswati: - Ya, ya, after all; it was the land of Great Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar. But, nowadays, all those Bihari and Jharkhand tribes have infiltrated in those areas, and at present, Midnapore is the most anti-social district of Bengal. All Maoists and Naxalite people resides there only. Ya, please carry on, Arindam.
Arindam: - My great grandfather had two sons. The elder son of my great grandfather was my real grandfather. In a fatal road accident, my great grandfather got badly injured. After 3 months, his brain started malfunctioning as an effect of that road accident. Then he died. In around 1936 or so, there were some natural calamites in the form of floods or drought. For the sake of survival, one group of Sain dynasty migrated towards Bardhaman and Howrah districts, the other group migrated towards the Sundarbans by crossing the Diamond Harbour River. And many of them remained in the Amgachia region of Midnapore. At that time, the barren agricultural lands in the Sundarban delta were known as ‘Laats”, and no one used to stay there as Royal Bengal Tiger was the King of that jungle. But later, gradually, villages emerged in those areas.
Rani: - What was the profession of your grandfather? Was he also a school Headmaster?
Arindam: - No, he was just a poor farmer. After his father’s death, poverty ruined his life; forget about education. But his brain was superb. He utilized his brain in farming and everyone used to follow his way of farming the lands. No one was able to beat him in any kind of Cards game. His calculation was so superb that he was able to tell, what playing cards you were possessing in your hand. Still today, when I play cards in my village, people say, arrey he is the grandson of Narayan Sain, the legend player of Cards. My grandfather never compromised on my father’s studies. By farming and playing cards, my grandfather earned lots of money and never stopped my father’s studies. My father was also expert in studies. The whole Bhubannagar, Haribasar and Kakdwip people knows the name of Ramkrishna Sain, as he was always the topper of the school and college.
Vivek: - But, your father is just a senior manager of UCO Bank. It is not a good career at all.
Arindam: - Boss, in those times, there were no IT or Finance related companies to pay huge salaries. But, yes, my father got selected in State Bank of Mysore, IPS, CBI, but my grandfather did not allow him to go and stay outside West Bengal. So, he accepted the offer letter of UCO Bank and decided to settle down in Thakurpukur.
Rani: - What about your uncles?
Arindam: - Well, my father has three younger brothers. They are not good at studies. But, they are expert in farming. If you want, you can have a visit to our village of Bhubannagar in Kakdwip. There, you will find a village named as “SAIN PARA”, where all the people of Sain community live. In that village, my nick name is Dulal, he he he…But the tragedy is that due to the politics of CPI (M), still there is no electricity in that area.
Saswati: - Anyway, we have got a rough idea about the “HISTORY OF SAIN DYNASTY”. The simplicity of a farmer is in your family blood, which is the reason; we don’t like you, even if you are a MBA Postgraduate. Ok, Goodbye.
