November 14, celebrated as Children's Day in India, is celebrated with painting competitions, photo sessions and corporate events. Children – our future voters and leaders – are among our most neglected citizens. Sixty-six years after Independence, the challenges ahead of
India's children have changed but hardly diminished. On the one hand, the Right to Education, enacted in 2009, has borne fruit. From 25 million in 2003, the number of out-of-school children dropped to 8.1 million in mid-2009. However, these development indicators are polarized by region. According to a recent study, RTE has failed to lift education in rural areas and teaching quality has declined. Child labor, though prohibited by law, is prevalent. And though infant mortality statistics have shown a turn for the better, access to quality
healthcare still remains elusive for most Indians.
According to UNICEF, malnutrition is more common in India than in Sub-Saharan Africa. One in every three malnourished children in the world lives in India.
I was a blessed child of my parents because I got whatever I wished for. Now I am independent person living life own my own terms. Me and my brother got what we wanted before we asked for it. But then we were never spoilt by luxuries. We never became spoilt brats and for that I would give all the credits to my mother who kept us so grounded and taught us to live life without any greed or pride. And I from the bottom of my heart want to thank my parents for providing me the best of the luxuries. When I sit and think about small children who cannot even get proper two meals a day, who are forced to work at such young age. When they are suppose to study, play and enjoy their childhood at that age they are a victims of child labour. I wish god gives me the strength in life where I am able to take care of some under privelaged children. And I would also feel content in life that I was able to do something worthy for children.
My dear friends lend your hands for help, even if we contribute a little bit for them in whatever way we can, it will be of great help for them and we will get that peace within ourselves. Just remember that every drop is required to make an ocean.
