Congress had hoped a strong showing would rejuvenate the government and give it leverage to widen the coalition and pressure its wayward allies to fall in line. A poor showing now left the UPA government limping toward the next election in 2014, even as economic growth slows and analysts say the nation is desperately in need of a transformative reform agenda. The Congress-led national coalition has been battered by corruption scandals and weakened by growing opposition from rebellious smaller parties within the government that have blocked major new legislation. For the present it is not unclear to understand, whether the results will have an impact on the government's stalled pro-market reform agenda, which has drawn opposition from coalition partners and within the party itself. The party's setbacks in Uttar Pradesh and the other states could make it harder for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's already weakened coalition government to pursue reforms that could shore up economic growth, which has slipped below 7 percent.

While analysing the results in all these states and when looking forward to the coming national elections, one could clearly see the hard times, the congress party and UPA is going to face. Congress President Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law, and Priyanka’s husband, Robert Vadra may have the second thought for the present. He had stated that he was not averse to joining politics. "I would definitely contest if the people so desired,'' he told newspersons in Amethi, when asked whether he would be keen on joining politics.
