One of the best things that happened in the trip is the fact that I was sponsored the ViaTerra Fly GT tank bag by the nice folks at ViaTerra. I already had the ViaTerra Claw, hence my expectations from the fly was high already! The Fly GTarrived just a day prior to my trip. So had little time to explore and test its capabilities. This had to be done on the go. The thing to be noted is that I wasn’t given a normal Fly, I was given the Fly with removable portions that could be put together using the already stitched Velcro on it. Details later. For now, the Fly GT has the following: · 1 main compartment(That can easily fit 2*1L bottles and a 500ml Motul chain lube and still have space left) · 1 zip mesh pouch on the inside of flap · 1 zip on the outside of the flap · 3 external pockets(Two on the side and one on the bottom) In total, 6 compartments. The extra padding of the GT I got was 3 in number, 1 main~2cm thick foam layer and other 2 pieces which could be adjusted in any way which way possible to fit the DSLR and the lens. And then 1 see the most awesome part of the claw. Its rain cover(pic). Things I carried in the bag are as follows – 1. Main compartment – a. Canon 600D with 18-55 Std lens b. 70 -300mm telephoto zoom lens c. 1TB external HDD d. HDD USB cable e. Phone charger f. Silicon packets to absorb moisture 2. Zip Inner Compartment a. Original License b. Original RC c. Original PUC d. One extra memory card for camera e. DSLR Battery charger+wire f. Extra DSLR battery 3. Side Zip Pouches(LH & RH) a. Torch b. Lighter c. Earphones d. Chocolate Bars 4. Upper Flap Zip a. Rough cloth b. 1 pct. of zip ties c. Cash 5. Secret Zip a. Extra pair of keys Earthlings, I tell you, if there is anything I love other than I love on planet earth is ViaTerra’s rain cover for its bag. In my entire riding I went through moderately heavy to oh-so-fucking-heavy rains and my Tankbag, fly, which carried my friends 30k worth canon 600D DSLR(+18-55) and another friend’s 20k worth 70-300mm lens. Not a molecule of water inside the bag. With 5147 kms in 20 Days. The Fly GT just proved to be my perfect companion. Now that was happiness for me more so because my Zeus Riding jacket which claimed to be waterproof and I was all wet and damp inside(more on that later). This bag was on my tank the whole trip. When in Kerala, at my native, whenever I moved from one house to another I used the fly as the saddle bag – easy to full fuel, coz not everyone has a haveli full of joint family pictured in the Bollywood;). The best part is that you can conceal it and use it as a backpack too. Few things about the usability of the bag – it is much easier to take out the camera from The Fly GT when compared to The Fly as it was made specifically as the DSLR tank bag. Reason – you do not have to waste time removing the elastic straps. Now, it may seem a simple job however with the gloves on, I can’t imagine doing that without an issue or even quick. However, the flipside is, if you have just the camera inside the fly, it’ll keep on dancing here and there clueless. Tip – choose to keep some sort of a cushion inside the bag along with the camera and the extra lens.(I had kept my extra 2 balaclavas and an extra cloth) Areas Of improvement: · One desirable factor would be to have the Outer Flap Zip in reverse. It will really ease the access of the things inside without having to remove the rain cover completely. This would ensure the bag not getting wet when trying to get cash, etc. out. The LH & RH side pouches are in prefect sync. · Also, I would suggest the “push button”(with a flip cloth cover) rather than Velcro as it tends to not stick around properly when required. A hybrid of both could also be beneficial. Final Verdict – · The ViaTerra Fly GT is an amazing Tank Bag if you wish carry your camera or you can choose to remove all the extra padding and use it as a normal tank bag to carry stuff for a day or 2 trip. · For 1700INR what more can you ask for! · Yes rain cover is included and works effectively too. · So I’d say this is a highly recommended product, Value for money! · It is suitable for all the KTM’s, the Pulsar, the Yamaha’s, etc. So all in all, this is a highly recommended Tank Bag for all tourers. P.S. One thing that I want the readers to know is that even though I was sponsored this tank bag, in no way was I be biased towards the product and that the review would be what I feel and what is this bag all about.
