Friends: The rains during July to November will be copius and generally floods will occur, if stormy conditions prevail in and around Chennai. Unfortuntely, our ever expanding Chennai is starving for water and areas around Tambaram, Pallavaram etc places are feeling the pinch. If rain is there there is no problem, and the irony is that around Chennai, there is plenty of torrential rain and flood havoc is reported. Hope, our politicians are also struggling to manage the situations but they are more concerned with their political activity than mitigating the water scarcity. Most of the flood waters are wasted and flowed to the sea, but they don't supply water to the neighbouring states ! It is not possible to divert flood waters to draught areas during floodding, but these could be thought of and suitable arrangements can be made before floods. There are talks of connecting rivers and we spend more time in talking than acting ! How much loss is happening during floods and how many crores are allocated by the Central Govt.(as was announced every time, when there is flood or draught. How many lives are lost for want of safe places. (This is a world phenominon, but our concern is with our own country) The situation reminds me of one story - a mother wanted her son, who is a small boy to get milk from the vendor and gave money as well as beating - and a bystander asked why you are hitting the boy, and the mother said, after spilling the milk, there is no point in beating the boy, but before that, at least he will remember the beating and bring milk without spilling.! Who is going to think about the whole nation and nationalise all rivers and bring under one authority, to enable plan well in advance of impending floods and draught conditions and take suitable remedial action before any damage occurs ? No life should be lost and succor should reach in time to the needy. Then only we can be proud of our administrators.!!
