We like to call it "westernization" in the sense we are emulating the west and not keeping in touch with our own traditions etc. However, if one gives it a serious thought, we are actually not emulating anybody. We are simply doing what makes sense to us.

Why do men and women show an inclination towards western clothes? Well, because they are not as cumbersome to wear like sarees etc. Wearing dhotis could also be so.

Do our so called Indian values, cultures etc give adequate importance to freedom or equality of rights where deserved to women? Not really, that's why male chauvinism has plagued various Indian communities for so long. So, people like to use "westernization" or "current trends" as an excuse to overcome that. Holding on to old values leads to a suppressed society, in many aspects. Not trying to say it's all bad!

Why are there more "love marriages" now and why are even "arranged marriages" now happening after knowing the person beforehand? Well, in an effort to know what you are selecting, like one does, when adopting any new product.

We are still not using toilet paper as primary means in the toilet, as our way was already more robust with regards to cleanliness.

We are also not to handing out licenses to anybody and everybody for guns etc as that could potentially lead to mishap than security depending on person and circumstances.

One could cite endless instances. but in the end anything is only adopted more because it makes some kind of sense.

Hence, it's more about adopting what makes sense, rather than emulating anybody. It is true however, that relatively more norms of the west are more open and based on practicality. What makes sense, based on relatively sound reasoning attracts people.
