If you are planning to buy the iPhone in India, you don't need to unlock it (means using any sim card you like). You can just use it on either the Hutch or Airtel networks. The only thing that you might need to do is jailbreak it. That has already been done for the iPhone 3g. Do some google search a read more...
The price is a bit steep I know. You can try getting it either in the gray market or from the US (although the 3g phone has not yet been cracked -- but will be soon enough)
