axis mundi . In both Buddhism and Hinduism, the pillar symbolized the axis mundi (the axis on which the world spins). The Lion Capital of Ashoka is a sculpture of four Asiatic lions standing back to back, on an elaborate base that includes other animals.

Sarnath
At present the Column remains in the same place whereas the Lion Capital is at the Sarnath Museum.
The ashoka pillar is built at Sarnath (Uttar Pradesh).
