Coolie portrays a powerful tragedy of an orphan boy, Munoo, who comes across painful experiences of exploitation and inhuman treatment at the hands of humans of rich class making his life more painful. The novelist puts Munoo before us as a victim of irrational systems and the inhuman cruelties of society.
Coolie has been classed as a social tragedy because it is a study of the tragic effect of the cruel inhuman social forces on an individual. Munoo has become all the more tragic because he suffers acutely when he is merely a small child. There are many social forces which regularly contribute to Munoos tragedy.
Bring out the significance of the Shimla episode in Coolie
The Shimla episode exposes new form of exploitation. Before the Shimla episode, Munoo is subjected to different forms of exploitations: ….. cannot become consensual sexual partnership. Anand would have us believe that Munoo dies because of the double bind of oppression.
