In the Apostles Creed I was taught that Jesus descended into the dead. Now it states into hell. As we were taught, he descended into the dead meant into purgatory to open the gates of purgatory for those souls to ascend into heaven. As for the original sin sealed the gates until the Saviour was born and died for us to be risen from the dead and raised into heaven. Now it states he descended into hell what purpose would this be? Why the wording change?
