“10 Things I Hate About You” – PG-13
A Modern day remake of Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew, ” the catch is that it’s set in a high school. Julia Stiles plays Katarina, a girl who doesn’t get involved in the social scene at her high school. Her sister, Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) is on the opposite end if that spectrum. She’s very popular and all the boys want to date her. But, their father (Larry Miller) has rules; Bianca can’t go to parties or date unless Katarina is also going.
So, some of the boys at school decide to hire someone to date Kat. They approach Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger) to do this job. He’s an outlaw in his own right and they think he can get Kat to date him. He successfully does, but when Kat finds out that he was paid, all bets are off.
This was a very cute movie. Larry Miller’s role as the over protective father/gynecologist is too funny. He even goes as far as to make Bianca wear a ‘pregnant belly’ before letting her out to go on her dates. Julia Stiles is fabulous as always and her on screen chemistry with Heat Ledger is fantastic. I have a feeling these two will advance far in their acting careers.
This film was written originally by William Shakespeare and then updated by Karen McCullah Lutz. The direction was done by Gil Junger. This movie was a sweet look at a brilliant play. I liked this movie very much and have seen it more than once. I would recommend it, not only to compare it to the original, but as a light romantic comedy as well. It’s a great date movie!
Enjoy!
