I grabbed a copy of 2 States way back in college. I liked the book and thought to myself - it has all the ingredients of a Bollywood movie.
Based on the book by Chetan Bhagat, 2 States directed by Abhishek Varman is neat. It stays true to the characters etched by Chetan Bhagat – Krish Malhotra and Ananya Swaminathan.
Plot: Krish meets the beautiful and attractive Ananya in IIM Ahmedabad. With hormones rushing, the story is the tried and tested one – boy meets girl, falls in love but parents are against it. Will their love stand the test of time?
But behold, this is the new millennium where the old formula is given chutzpah, passion, and color.
Like every boy in IIM – A, Krish is mesmerized by Ananya’s beauty and outspoken attitude. From gorging on chicken to listening to Ananya vent out her frustration over the terrible sambhar, Krish is head over heels in love. So much he even tries teaching her Economics which he detests.
Ananya Swaminathan is a cool Tamil girl who is attractive, energetic and has a zest for life. She is over the moon when Krish proposes his commitment to her.
Having cracked the Sunsilk interview, she gets posted in Chennai where her parents and brother reside.
With a lot of convincing, Krish too decides to move to Chennai for his lady love despite his Mum’s wishes. Here begins their roller-coaster ride of convincing each others parents.
The story never has a dull moment. Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt are spunky, talented and add fire onscreen with their crackling chemistry.
Amrita Singh as Arjun Kapoor’s Mum is loud, outspoken and every bit the Punjabi woman. Revathi who plays Alia’s Mum is sweet and fits the bill.
I loved Shiv Kumar Subramaniam who plays Alia’s Dad. His role though stereotyped, was perfect. Ronit Roy as Arjun’s Dad saved the climax:)
Catch the movie – it is fun, sweet and simple.
Music by Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy is thoroughly rocking! Offo, Iski Uski, Mast Magan, Chaandaniya are all mesmerising and foot tapping.
