Nagesh Kukunoor is known for his choice of off bit subjects. 3 Deewarein is just one of them. When I first came across the story, I wondered whether any director would be able to handle it; but Nagesh proved himself with great intelligence. But I still wonder why his films are not well appreciated? Why his films find difficulties in finding the distributor? I got the answer, read on..
About the movie..
3 Deewarein is all about three prisoners..three characters, its about their mistakes, about their vision of life.. and a girl.. and her relation with their stories. Too complecated?? Relax.
Nagya(Nagesh Kukunoor) believes that he came into the jail by mistake & have strong faith that someday he’ll be free.
Jaggu (Jackie Shroff) is a pessimist and waiting for the judment day..is accused of killing his wife.
And Ishaan (Naseerudin Shah) is a optimist who believes in luck and blames on it for his presence in the jail.. is accused of murdering a pregnent woman accidentely.
Chandrika (Juhi Chawla), a documentery film maker enters into the life of these 3 prisoners and shows them the dreams of freedom.
Story revolves around these characters, their past and its influence on their present.
It takes a dramatic twist at the end (which i’m not going to tell you).
Gulshan grover as a Prison Warden adds his share to brilliant performances.
Technically speakin..
Direction, cinematography, screen play, editing and all other technical departments are just perfect. Director succeeds in keeping the interest of audience till the end. Movie starts with the 3 short scenes showing how these three guyes came to prison without wasting any time. Time (and patience) is also saved by elimination of songs. Overall we can say that Nagesh has secured his position in a club of brilliant directors of parallel cinema.
Some loud scenes..
Movie has some loud scenes like, a prisoner having sex with another prisoner and spreading AIDS, then some objectionable dialogues like, ’’Apney chotey gautam ko control karna seekh.’’. So be ready to get embrassed while watching this movie with family.
Why 3 Deewarein will not make business..
No doubt, Nagesh is brilliant director but he must learn a thing or two from Ram Gopal Varma. Ramu also takes uncommon subjects but knows how to make money out of it. He knows the thin line between entertainment and reality. COMPANY was also based upon a reality but succeed ’cause of entertaining ingrediants. Just a little proffesionalism and Nagesh would find a balance between parallel & main stream cinema. Good luck Nagesh.

Watch 3 Deewarein if you are a fan of parallel cinema. If you are a person who watch movie once in a month, then forget it.. go for Hungama.
