In fairness, it should be noted that small slivers of the movie are based on historical sources. Leonidas’ lines "Come and take them" and the "We’ll fight in the shade" come from 1st century CE historian/biographer Plutarch.
The herald-down-the-well scene is adapted from the account given by 5th century BCE historian Herodotus; according to him it was Xerxes’ father, Darius, who had pulled this stunt with both Sparta and Athens before Persia’s first invasion of Greece in 490 BCE. The herald at Sparta was thrown down a well; the herald at Athens was cast into a pit called the Barathron. Mindful of this, Xerxes skipped those two city-states when he made similar demands of Greece some years later.
