All the murder mysteries are mostly terrifying or thrilling. It has loud or scary background music and when the murder takes place, it sends a chill down our spine! But Abbas Mustan gives the murder mystery a new shape in 36 China Town!!
Sonya Chang (Isha Koppikar) gets murdered in her house in 36 China Town. And the accused in this murder are:
Raj (Shahid Kapoor): He is a struggling actor. He acts nicely but has a lot of over confidence. He thinks that Bollywood is incomplete without him!
Priya (Kareena Kapoor): She is a modern day educated girl. She had ran away from her house and came to Mumbai.
KK (Jhonny Lever): He was a gambling lover. He always lost in gambling but still he did not lose hope!
Ruby (Tanaaz Lal): She was KK’s wife. She always tried to persuade KK from playing gambling but never succeeded!
Natwar (Paresh Rawal): He had made a world record in losing in gambling! He had even mortgaged 4 out of his 5 hotels in gambling!
Gracy (Payal Rohatgi): She was Natwar’s wife. In order to erase the habit of gambling from Natwar, she took him to USA and gave him electric shocks!
Rocky (Upen Patel): He was a playboy. Flirting a girl was quite easy for him. And this hobby made him accused in the murder!
The story: Sonya Chang’s son Vicky had gone lost. She decided to give 25 lakhs to those who will find her lost son. Meanwhile Raj and Priya had run out of their homes and came to Mumbai. Raj had come to become a superstar while Priya had come for her boyfriend. They both found Vicky. They called Sonya and told her that they would be coming to Goa to return her son. When the reached in Sonya’s house 36 China Town they found Sonya murdered. In fear, they ran away from there leaving their suitcase behind! An intelligent detective (Akshaye Khanna) investigated this case. He arrested Raj, Priya, KK, Ruby, Natwar, Gracy and Rocky in connection with Sonya’s murder. So who has murdered Sonya? And what is his motive??
Shahid Kapoor was perfect. Whatever role is given to him, he plays it very properly. He never disappoints! He is soon going to become the best actor of Bollywood. I hope in his next movie Chup Chup Ke he gives a perfect performance.
Kareena Kapoor looked cute and charming! She has very little to do in the second half but still she gives a great performance!
Jhonny Lever was outstanding! He is still the best comedian of the film industry. His acting, his reaction, everything is applauding. I hope I see him more in movies now! Tanaaz Lal looked fresh and energetic. She performed nicely from the beginning till the end.
Paresh Rawal was quite funny. He succeeds in entertaining the viewers. Payal Rohatgi looked sexy. She delivered a good performance (This was her second A-grade movie after Plan!).
Upen Patel was glamorous, cool and excellent! But still we could not rate his acting as some Viraj Jadhav has dubbed his voice because Upen ‘still’ could not speak Hindi fluently! But still, it is harder to believe that it is his debut movie! And this chap has already signed seven movies!
Akshaye Khanna was perfect. He gives a top notch performance.
Others like Isha Koppikar, Vivek Shaque, Dinyar Contractor, Preeti Puri, Raj Zuthshi were good. Tanushree Datta was there for a song. She looked hot. Priyanka Chopra is also there in special appreance.
Himesh Reshammiya’s music was amazing. Songs were unnecessarily added in the first half. ‘Aa Aa Ashiqui Mein Teri’ and ‘Jab Kabhi Mein Kho Jaaun’ came one after the another. But all the songs are excellent and soothing!
Cinematography was perfect. Story was nice.
Abbas Mustan’s direction was stylish. They had made this murder mystery funny! The movie has some few thrilling moments. The movie is of 2 ½ hours but you do not get bored even for a minute. The suspense is quite shocking.

The climax
On the whole, 36 China Town is a great entertainer and fun to watch. Do not listen to the maniacs like Taran Adarsh (of indiafm who gave * ½ rating to 36 China Town) and Mayank Shekhar (of Mumbai Mirror who gave * rating). Just go and watch it and laugh!
