Well, Im an avid reader. And often I come across books that leaves a lasting impression on my conscience. But to bring it down to my best 5 is a herculean task, but anyway I am doing it with a free and unbaised mind. The 5 books I have named are at random and they all mean a great deal to me.
1> ROOTS BY ALEX HALEy
this book is a must read for those who have a quest for knowledge..to understand human beings, to know how things emerge, I was reduced to tears reading this book, a book of compelling humanity and how life truimps over hardship..u are missing something significant if u havent read it ...thumps up....
2> A FINE BALANCE BY ROHINTON MISTRY
this book is the definitive book of life, a true indian saga. Rushdie and Seth are left far behind when it comes to thought provoking plots and nail biting ground realities....sit up and take notice ..says mistry...a fine fine novel.
3>THE GOOD EARTH P S BUCK
this book is a classic....its life in its full glory....the tale of ordinary chinese man through ordinary eyes...of struggle, compassion, truimph and twist of fate..life with its beauty and its irony....great work.
4> EXODUS LEON URIS
the book which tells us how religion caste and creed can turn upon mankind and how the same thing binds us....an enigmatic and thought provoking voyage of the Jews after being chased away by the nazis ..the forming of Israel.the promised land ....the torture they face, the humiliation the bore, the hardship they endured, the religion and faith that binded them together and made them carry on. this book will leave a lasting impression on your soul.
5> THE ALCHEMIST PAULO COHELO
the dreamers book. this book takes u on a magical ride.......sometimes we are too blind to see things around and us and thus we wallow in darkness for the same things.....this book give u hope and tell u that all is not lost....have a dream in ur heart to follow. thumbs up.
well, I have left out some very good books out of the list...the fountain head and atlas shrugged by Aynrand, family matters by Rohinton Mistry, god of small things by Arundatti Roy, love story , the class and the doctors by Erich Segal, the lightness of being by Milan Kundera, the hungry tide by Amithab Ghosh, the namesake by jhumpa lahiri, the life of pi by Ian Martel, a suitable boy by vikram seth, a bend in the river a house for mr biswas by v s naipaul, the davinci code by dan brown, catch 22 by joseph heller, the diary of Anne frank by anne frank, zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance and lila by robert pirsig.....and the list goes....
