After accomplishing an almost impossible task of finishing my homework before midnight, I barely had energy to do anything else. So I sat on my bed and stared, and as I stared I realised my room looked like the town Garbage dump!! In the dump however, I spotted some of my stuff, which I hadnt laid eyes on for ages.
So as curiosity took the best of me, I started digging in the rubble. I came across an oooooold photo of myself, a half torn piece of Hw (for not having turned it in, I had to spend one whole hour staring at a wall?in the principles office!!), and I also found a list I had started ages ago about my favourite books. However, that list only contained childrens books like Noddy and Cinderella!! So, Im gonna make a brand new list of my Five Favourite Books here.
The Countdown starts now...
On the Fifth spot a novel by J.D Salinger called Catcher In The Rye, which narrates the story from a point of view of a teenager called Holden Caulfield. The mentally distraught teenager recounts his life incidents in the 2 days that he escaped from school and flashes back to his experiences that has lead him to question society and its boundaries. Holden finds himself approaching adulthood, and is facing a conflict in his mind as to what his true identity is. This book made my Top 5 list because of the unique narrative, which is follows and the amazingly detailed look at life incidences that often one doesnt give a second thought to.
On Number Four is a shocking non-fictional recount of the Holocaust: (b)Night(/b) by Elie Weisel. I have always been fascinated with the heart-wrenching stories of the Holocaust, but Night is not just another story of the deadly era, its harsh realism touches ones? heart with each and every experience that the narrator has. Elie Weisel?s brilliant style of writing captures each image, and I can bet that there won?t be one moment when this amazing story doesn?t keep you horrified and abashed!!
Number Three on this list would have to be Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by the lady with a brilliant imagination J.K. Rowling. After reading the first four of the Harry Potter series, about a zillion times each, I hadn?t expected any other book to be any better. But good old Rowling returned with another great story, where one gets lost in her magical world only to resurface at the very end of the book!! In this book, Lord Voldermort has returned to power, while the magical world is divided into two parts: Those who believe in His return and those who don?t. Harry Potter spends another year at Hogwarts and this time the Defence Against The dark Arts teacher is Dolores Umbridge, whose ?toad like eyes? dig in to every action of Harry and his friends.
My Second favourite book in the whole wide world is Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriél Garcià Marquez. This amazing love story based in the Caribbean set-up kept me captured till the end! When I was first introduced the narration of the book is absolutely mind-boggling, without following a set pattern. The story is about Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza, whose love brought them back together after living a lifetime away from each other. The longing that Florentino feels, as he waits for his lover for 7 decades, touches the heart. The story is also comprised of some amazing experiences and the South American culture is truly reflected in the narrative. I highly recommend this read!!
Aaaaanddd? The Number One spot on my Top Five list goes to The Godfather by Mario Puzo. As we all know, this book is a classic that has amazed readers for decades!! I was given this book as an assignment over my summer vacations, and like all other things that you are obligated to do, I wasn?t too keen on giving it a read. But from Page 1, I remained mesmerised by the charm of Puzo?s writing.
The story, with the New York Italian Mafia backdrop, engulfs all the life of the Corleone Family, a Mafia family, and how they get involved in an underworld war, which pulls the family through many ups and downs. If any of you has seen the movie, I must tell you that the book is a thousand, if not a million times more powerful and praiseworthy!! I cannot emphasise enough how much I recommend this book!! After this book, I did not question my reading assignments so much! A pure Classic !!!
