Be it Arnold Schwarzenegger or Rajnikanth or Jim Carrey, all of them are trapped in their screen images. Whatever the story, their characters are pretty much the same. While it may be enjoyable for the audience and even convenient for these stars, sadly, we also lose out on seeing some other aspects of these actors. Sandler seems to have become a recent addition to this long list.
What are the standard ingredients of a Sandler movie? An interesting plot and some romance, both whipped up in a lot of laughs (including the mildly unpalatable kind). This movie is no exception really. Trying repeatedly to woo a girl who cant remember what happened the previous day might be more than just interesting. The romance is fine, though at a few places it seems unnatural. The surroundings of Hawaii is a pleasant change.
There are a whole lot of characters, mostly under-developed, including a walrus! All of them contribute to the humour at various points of the movie. One wonders if the dirty jokes were really needed in this quantity. Most of them are straight on the face! Also thrown in are some jokes of the Farrelly type on handicapped people. Your memory might be drawn to The Wedding Singer, a clean comedy featuring the same lead pair.
Talking of the two primary actors, Barrymore seems like she walked into Sandlers sets just for friendship sake or some thing like that. She looks pretty and has fun. Sandler is his usual self, rattling off jokes incessantly, minus any facial and physical antics. That portion is left to Schneider, who succeeds in being disgusting.
The audience in the theatre (including me, of course) roared out in laughter many times during the movie. They seemed to be happy leaving their brains outside and having a good time. Yeah, this is a good movie if thats what you toore looking for.
Bottom-line: Great date movie, if your pair can take some dirty stuff.
