Like most Bengalis I am also not averse to consider myself a connoisseur of food. I always believe that good food can be a great motivator. Therefore you can imagine when 6 Ballygunge Place opened its door in 12th Main HAL 2nd Stage Indiranagar who landed up in their doorsteps with extra sniffing and licking powers.
The Food
The restaurant is currently serving all traditional Bengali cuisines and certain old continental dishes made famous in Park Street of sixties Kolkata.
The mocktails are named exotically after house addresses of famous Kolkatans. For starters please try the jhiri jhiri potato fries or the brinjal fry. It tastes great with plain rice mixed with the amazing aam dal and flavoured with this special fragrant lemon (gandha lebu). Ummmmm……it still make my tongue tingle.
The vegetarian spread starts with the nostalgic alu posto ( mother still makes that better) followed by various vegetable and paneer curries all cooked in the traditional Bengali way.
However the reason this restaurant is attracting all the Bongs in Bangalore is mainly because of its fish, chicken and mutton dishes. The fish dishes here can make you sway and drool in ecstasy. Steamed Hilsa (bhapa hilsa), Mustard Pabda (sarshe pabda) Green Cocunut Prawn (dab chingri), Prawn Malai Curry, Chital Curry (chital macher muittha) the list is endless. Dahi Chicken and Red curry Chicken are the two Chicken preparations which is available here. Last but not least is the dry Mutton Curry (kasha mangsho) which you must eat with luchis.
Sweets are served as desserts but that can be eaten if you have space in your stomach after eating the main course.
The Ambience
The décor is minimal. The interior tries to capture a typical Kolkata residence with some pencil sketches and photographs of colonial Kolkata.
The service is satisfactory. Most of the waiters are imported from Kolkata and are happy to help you brush up your Bengali. They however need to be trained better by the management if they want to have a customer base other than Bengalis.
The only black spot against this restaurant is the pricing they have kept. It is pretty expensive after you realize that you have to pay 12.5% VAT over the price written in the Menu. As they say you cant have everything on a platter.
