Agni Chakra - Dimaag ka Dahi

Movie - Agnichakra

Cast - Naseeruddin Shah, Dimple Kapadia, Govinda, Anupam Kher

There was this insomniac who was browsing TV channels one late night when he bumped into a channel where a movie was just starting. And the fun too. The cast had enough heavyweights for him to gamble on watching a late night show. And the movie would have gone down like any other C-grade thriller but for the part bizzarre-part funny treatment. Here are 10 reasons why the movie is a must-watch.

  1. An opening that depicted a University of Crime presided over by a Chandraswami like Godman.

  2. A gun-toting Govinda dressed in metallic hued, skintight dresses crooning Apna bas yeh kaam - Action. And yeah.the gun brought back memories of childhood for the insomniac as it was the same Leo model that he used to covet.

  3. A cops-smugglers encounter that Farah Khan missed while selecting cult bollywood sequences to spoof for Mai Hoon Na.

  4. A lecture on the morals of dressing up in Indian clothes which would have made Pravin Togadia proud and the producers of The Great Indian Comedy Show jealous.

  5. Naseer as the tough-as-nails cop. Dimple as a fisherwoman.

  6. Naseer again as a man-with-no-name and mexican bandit hybrid.

  7. A young Raju Srivastav in his 20s.

  8. Bappida’s music and playback.

  9. Editing that would make the world’s craziest roller-coaster look like a snail on a morning walk.

  10. James Logie Baird for having invented the television that can be switched off after the first 20 minutes of the movie.

Apart from this, the movie isn’t very different from your run of the mill C-grade flick. Naseer & Raj Kiran are partner cops. Raj Kiran is killed by the University Chancellor. His brother(Govinda) sets out on a quest of revenge. He finds an able and willing ally in Naseer, who has now retired to a life in an obscure koli hamlet and is romancing Dimple when he isn’t beating up the baddies of the hamlet. The rest is easy for anyone to figure out.

All in all, from the reasons listed above for watching the movie, reason 10 stands out as the most important one. So, watch this movie only if its being telecast. Don’t waste money if the re-release hits the theatre and don’t rent out the CD.

P.S.: Didn’t mention Anupam Kher anywhere excpt for the cast as he was simply wasted as Govinda’s father.
